As the very cold weather is back I thought a few tips on winter bonsai care would be helpful.

If you have an outdoor bonsai some protection from the worst of the weather would be beneficial. An unheated greenhouse or temporary shelter (such as under a bench covered with polythene) would be ideal. It is important that outdoor bonsai are not heated; they need the dormant winter period to rest.
If you have made provision for your outdoor bonsai please don’t forget to check it for water and ensure that the soil is not allowed to dry out. Please do not feed outdoor bonsai during winter months. They are not growing so will not require any fertiliser until the spring.

It is perfectly normal for indoor bonsai to shed some leaves at this time of year. Please don’t worry about this , it is to be expected! The leaves which drop should be the older ones towards the centre of the tree, not the new growing tips on the ends of the twigs. Try to keep any indoor bonsai at a temperature between 15-20oC. If your bonsai do get cold they will look a little pale. The minimum temperature for indoor bonsai should be 10-12oC. You will normally notice that any pale leaves will green up when the warmer months arrive.
Please check the soil for watering daily!!!! Central heating can dry out the soil very quickly. If you have a water mister you may find your bonsai enjoys being misted (this is in addition to normal watering). Misting helps maintain the humidity around the bonsai. Indoor bonsai are still growing, all be it slowly, during the winter months so we recommend feeding at least once a month if you are using a liquid bonsai feed. I hope these tips help.

  1. Hi all,

Thanks for a great blog. Winter months you should place each bonsai on a table or bench to elevate it off the ground. Use something such as newspaper to cover the pot for added insulation to the tree. Thanks again…
