People repot bonsai trees for different reasons. Sometimes, they want to change how the tree looks, or maybe the old pot is broken and needs replacing. But usually, it’s because the tree has gotten too big for its pot bound. Repotting not only makes the bonsai look nicer but also helps it to grow, especially if it gets more room in a bigger pot.
How to Tell If Your Bonsai Needs Repotting?
To figure out if your bonsai needs repotting, you’ve got to take a close look. If the roots are all packed in tight and there’s no space left in the soil, it’s time to repot. Gently taking the tree out of its pot will let you see if the bonsai is pot bound. If they are, it’s time to either root prune or give the tree a bigger pot.
When and How Often to Repot Bonsai?
When to repot your bonsai depends on what species it is and if it is an outdoor or indoor bonsai. Usually, indoor bonsai like to be repotted between May and September, while outdoor trees do better in March. Older bonsai need repotting less often, possible every 3-5 years, whereas younger bonsai need repotting more frequently. Fast growing bonsai like the Chinese Elm may need repotting/root pruning once a year whereas slow growing species like the Fukien Tea Tree may need this attention ever other year.
