What is a bonsai?
The word ‘bonsai’ can be literally translated into ‘bon’ meaning tray or pot and ‘sai’ meaning tree or plant. When growing bonsai we take our inspiration from the natural beauty surrounding us. We study the shapes and characteristics of full grown trees and display these features in the artistic form of bonsai.
Where did bonsai orginate?
The art of growing miniature trees in ornamental pots has been practised for centuries, first in China, then Japan and gradually all over the world.
Are bonsai easy to care for?
Bonsai trees have been grown for around a thousand years by people from all walks of life. Many millions of ordinary people - not just bonsai masters - grow beautiful bonsai, and so can you. All you need to know to get started is a few bonsai care basics; these are watering, positioning and feeding - it’s easy!
Everyone of our bonsai trees comes with complete - easy to understand - care instructions written by our own bonsai experts, specifically for the species of tree you choose.
How do I grow a bonsai?
You can grow a bonsai from seed or cutting eg. an acorn, which is a great fun, but it does take many years and a fair amount of knowledge. You can also start training raw material, maybe a small juniper bush from a garden centre. This is a better way to start, as you have something straight away. But it can be a bit daunting and some knowledge is needed and it will still be sometime before a true bonsai will emerge.
So to really get started in the art of bonsai we recommend that you buy one and have a go! You don’t have to spend a lot of money, even a small bonsai will need nurturing, pruning, styling and of course you will a have a beautiful bonsai to admire.
You just need know what you are buying is strong and healthy, supplied with care instructions and backed up with lots of help and advice. That’s where we come in, at Bonsai Direct we are passionate about bonsai and have been for over 30 years, we want you to enjoy the art as much as we do. Everyone of our bonsai is carefully grown using age old techniques to produce authentic and beautiful bonsai.
