Sometimes, bonsai trees outgrow their pots or become “pot bound,” where their roots are tightly packed. Repotting rejuvenates your bonsai, giving it a fresh start and encouraging growth, especially with a slightly larger pot.

How Do I Know if My Bonsai is Pot Bound?

Pot-bound is a common issue with potted plants, including bonsai trees. It occurs when roots overcrowd the soil, stopping further growth. To check if your bonsai is pot-bound, gently remove it from its pot, possibly after removing any securing wire. If you find compacted soil filled with roots, it’s time for a root prune or a larger pot.
