Bonsai trees undergo repotting for various reasons. Sometimes, it’s simply about a change in appearance, enhancing its visual appeal. Other times, wear and tear on the pot prompt the need for a refresh. Typically, though, the primary reason for repotting is when a bonsai outgrows its current pot or its roots become pot-bound. Regardless of the motive, repotting breathes new life into your bonsai, giving it a fresh look and enabling growth, especially with a slightly larger pot.
Detecting Pot-Bound Bonsai
Pot-bound is a common concern for all potted plants, including bonsai trees. This happens when roots densely fill the soil, halting further growth. To determine if your bonsai is pot-bound, gently remove it from its pot, you may have to remove any securing wire. If you find compacted soil and a dense network of roots, it’s time for a root prune or a larger pot.
Determining the ideal repotting frequency can be challenging. Some species, like the Carmona Fukien Tea tree, have delicate roots and don’t require frequent repotting. Conversely, fast-growing species like the Chinese Elm benefit from regular repotting every other year. Generally, older and larger bonsai should be repotted every 3-5 years, while younger ones may require annual repotting.
When Should I Repot My Bonsai Tree?
For indoor bonsai, the warmer months from May to September are optimal for repotting. Outdoor deciduous bonsai trees should be repotted in March, before their buds swell. Similarly, hardy outdoor evergreens like pines and junipers are best repotted around March. However, consider local weather conditions and wait until the harshest winter weather has passed before repotting.
