Learn More About Repotting Bonsai Trees
Why Repot Bonsai Trees?
Repotting bonsai trees serves various purposes. It could be to revitalise the tree’s appearance, swap out a damaged pot, or address the issue of it outgrowing its current container or becoming “pot bound,” where roots take up all the available space. Repotting not only improves the bonsai’s aesthetics but also encourages healthier growth, particularly if transferred to a slightly larger pot.
How to Determine If Your Bonsai Needs Repotting?
Identifying whether your bonsai is “pot bound” requires a careful inspection. If the roots are tightly packed in the soil, limiting further growth, it’s likely time for repotting. Gently extracting the tree from its pot allows for a thorough examination of the root system. You may need to remove existing wire to free the bonsai from its pot. If you notice compacted soil intertwined with roots, it’s a sign that the bonsai may benefit from root pruning or moving into a larger pot.
When and How Often to Repot?
The timing of repotting depends on factors like the bonsai’s species and environmental conditions. Typically, indoor bonsai thrive with repotting between May and September, while outdoor varieties, especially deciduous ones, fare best in March, before new buds emerge. Outdoor evergreens, such as pines and junipers, also benefit from repotting in spring. Repotting frequency varies; older bonsai generally need it every 3-5 years, while younger, faster-growing ones may require annual attention. Slow-growing species may only need root pruning or repotting every other year.
What’s Included in Our Bonsai Pot Kits?
Our bonsai pots come with essential tools to simplify the repotting process. Each kit includes detailed step-by-step instructions, mesh for drainage holes, wire for securing the tree, a chopstick for soil manipulation, and additional soil to surround the root ball. These items are provided at no extra cost to ensure a smooth repotting experience.
We’ve also compiled a brief instructional video to guide you through the repotting or root pruning process, along with pot preparation.
