Exploring Bonsai Tree Re-Potting
What prompts the re-potting of bonsai trees?
Re-potting bonsai trees serves various purposes. Perhaps you seek an aesthetic transformation, desiring a fresh visual appeal. Alternatively, your current pot may have endured wear and tear, prompting a desire to revitalise your bonsai’s presentation. Typically, the primary reason for re-potting a bonsai tree comes from its outgrowing its current pot or becoming root-bound. Regardless of the motive, a new pot injects renewed aesthetic charm and facilitates healthy growth, particularly with a slightly larger pot.
How can I recognise when a bonsai is ‘root-bound’ and needs re-potting?
Fascinatingly, all potted plants, including bonsai trees, inevitably become ‘root-bound’ over time. This term simply indicates that the soil within the pot is densely packed with roots. When this occurs, root growth ceases, stunting the plant’s overall development and leading to deterioration. Given the significance of the roots, ensuring adequate space for growth is extremely important.
Determining whether a bonsai is root-bound includes gently removing the tree from its pot, possibly first removing any securing wire at the pot’s base. If the soil appears dense and congested with roots, re-potting or root pruning may be beneficial.
This process isn’t always precise, as different species display varying root characteristics. For instance, the Carmona Fukien Tea tree has finer roots and may not benefit from frequent re-potting, whereas the Chinese Elm, known for its rapid growth, typically requires more regular re-potting, perhaps every other year. Generally, larger, older bonsai should undergo re-potting every 3-5 years, while younger specimens may necessitate annual re-potting, especially if they exhibit quick growth.
When is the ideal time to re-pot a bonsai tree?
Indoor bonsai trees are best re-potted during the warmer months between May and September, while outdoor deciduous bonsai fare well with re-potting in March, ideally before bud swelling occurs. However, timing may vary depending on spring weather conditions, with re-potting ideally occurring after the harshest winter weather subsides. Hardy outdoor evergreens like pines and junipers benefit from re-potting around March, in sync with springtime. Notably, young junipers under 20 years of age can be re-potted at any time except mid-winter.
What do our bonsai pots include?
Additionally, our premium selection of bonsai pots comes complete with a re-potting guide, drainage hole mesh, stabilisation wire, a chopstick for soil manipulation, and soil for the root ball. These essential items are complimentary with your purchase.
