Inspired by the Japanese Shohin bonsai tradition, which celebrates small trees typically measuring up to 20cm tall, this charming specimen captures incredible age and character in a compact design.

Description

Remarkable Dwarf Chinese Elm Bonsai – Windswept Character in Perfect Miniature Form

This remarkable dwarf Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia) bonsai is full of character, movement and natural beauty. Standing just 23cm tall, it captures the appearance of an ancient windswept tree in perfect miniature form.

Take a closer look at the details. The awesome exposed roots, strong windswept trunk and naturally twiggy branches give this little tree an incredible sense of age. Despite its small size, it has all the presence of a much larger specimen.

This is a wonderful example of a Shohin-style bonsai. Its compact size, beautiful proportions and powerful character make it a particularly special tree.

Awesome Roots and a Powerful Windswept Trunk

The roots are one of the most striking features of this dwarf Chinese Elm bonsai. They spread across the surface of the soil, creating a strong base and a wonderful sense of age.

Above them, the trunk sweeps dramatically to one side. This creates the appearance of a tree shaped by years of strong winds. As a result, the bonsai has a natural, weathered character that is both beautiful and full of movement.

Furthermore, the fine branches follow the flow of the trunk. Their delicate structure contrasts beautifully with the strong roots and adds to the tree’s miniature appearance.

Every detail works together to create a truly remarkable little bonsai.

Midnight Blue Japanese Suiban Pot with Contrasting Forest Green Tray

Lloyd has personally chosen a beautiful new pot and tray combination for this individual tree.

The bonsai sits in a brand-new, top-quality Japanese round irregular Suiban-style ceramic pot. Its rich midnight blue glaze adds depth and elegance, while the irregular circular shape complements the tree’s flowing movement.

For an artistic contrast, Lloyd has paired the pot with a forest green oval humidity tray. The two colours work beautifully together, creating a distinctive and eye-catching display.

Moreover, the combination of the irregular round pot and smooth oval tray adds another layer of interest to this special bonsai.

Naturally Twiggy Branches and Beautiful Miniature Leaves

The Chinese Elm is one of the most popular bonsai species, and it is easy to see why.

Its tiny, finely toothed green leaves create a delicate canopy. In addition, the species naturally develops a fine, twiggy branch structure. This makes it ideal for creating the appearance of a mature tree in miniature.

As the bonsai grows, regular light pruning helps maintain its compact shape. The small leaves and fine branches also make it especially suitable for Shohin bonsai styling.

Despite its miniature size, this little Chinese Elm has an impressive amount of detail and character.

An Easy-Care Bonsai for Beginners and Collectors

Chinese Elm bonsai are popular with beginners because they are hardy, adaptable and respond well to pruning.

They enjoy a cool, bright room with plenty of natural daylight. Water when the soil surface begins to feel slightly dry, while keeping the root area lightly moist. Regular pruning will help maintain the neat shape and naturally twiggy structure.

Furthermore, Chinese Elms are rewarding trees to care for. Their attractive foliage, strong growth and ability to develop fine branches make them a favourite with both beginners and experienced bonsai enthusiasts.

A Tiny Bonsai with Remarkable Character

This beautiful dwarf Chinese Elm proves that a bonsai does not need to be large to make an impression.

At just 23cm tall, it combines powerful roots, dramatic trunk movement and delicate foliage in one perfectly balanced miniature tree.

The midnight blue Japanese Suiban pot and contrasting forest green humidity tray complete its artistic presentation.

Carefully selected and styled at our family-run Devon nursery, this is a truly special little bonsai with enormous character.

You will receive the exact dwarf Chinese Elm bonsai photographed, complete with its new midnight blue ceramic pot and contrasting forest green oval humidity tray.
