Exquisite Father & Son Chinese Elm Bonsai Landscape | 18-Year-Old Cork Bark Trees & Japanese Zen Garden
A Beautifully Artistic Father and Son Bonsai Composition
This exquisite Father and Son Chinese Elm Bonsai is a truly beautiful miniature landscape, expertly composed by bonsai artist Lloyd Noall at Bonsai Direct in rural Devon.
Featuring two wonderfully characterful Chinese Elm bonsai trees (Ulmus parvifolia), this artistic arrangement captures the beauty of nature in miniature. The larger, more mature tree is approximately 18 years old and has an amazing twisting trunk with a lovely cork bark effect. Beside it sits a smaller, younger Chinese Elm with intricate exposed roots and beautifully curving trunk line.
Together, the two trees create a wonderfully balanced father and son design, with the younger bonsai artistically filling the space to the right of the main tree.
The entire composition has been planted into a brand-new, exceptionally high-quality Japanese shallow oval landscape bonsai pot in a stunning rich royal blue. Beneath the pot sits a large tray filled with white gravel, complete with a bamboo rake so you can create your own beautiful Japanese Zen garden designs.
The result is a very pretty, sophisticated and wonderfully artistic bonsai landscape that combines mature trees, beautiful craftsmanship and traditional Japanese garden inspiration.
This is the exact bonsai composition you will receive, individually photographed at our specialist Devon nursery.
An 18-Year-Old Chinese Elm with Exceptional Character
The older of the two Chinese Elm bonsai trees is approximately 18 years old and has developed a remarkable sense of maturity.
Its beautifully twisting trunk is one of my favourite features. The natural curves and movement give the tree wonderful character, while the textured cork bark effect creates the impression of a much older tree growing in the wild.
Over many years, this bonsai has developed exceptionally fine branching, known in bonsai as ramification.
The level of ramification is particularly impressive. A network of delicate secondary and tertiary branches creates a highly refined canopy, giving the tree a wonderfully mature appearance despite its miniature proportions.
This is the type of detail that takes time, patience and careful cultivation to achieve.
The contrast between the strong, twisting trunk and the intricate network of fine branches is simply beautiful.
A Younger Chinese Elm with Intricate Exposed Roots
Positioned to the right of the main tree, the smaller Chinese Elm brings a completely different character to the composition.
Its beautifully exposed roots create a fascinating feature at the base, while the heavily curving trunk introduces wonderful movement and interest.
Although younger and smaller than its companion, this little bonsai has plenty of personality. Its twisting form complements the older tree without competing for attention.
The younger bonsai has been positioned carefully to fill the space beside the main tree, creating depth, balance and a natural sense of companionship.
Together, the two trees form a charming father and son arrangement. The larger tree provides strength and maturity, while the smaller tree introduces youthful movement and delicacy.
It is a particularly pleasing composition, with every element working together to create a harmonious miniature landscape.
Beautifully Composed by Bonsai Artist Lloyd Noall
This individual bonsai landscape has been personally composed by Lloyd Noall, bonsai artist and founder of Bonsai Direct.
Creating a successful two-tree arrangement involves much more than simply placing two bonsai together.
The proportions, trunk movement, branch structure, spacing and overall balance must all work in harmony.
In this composition, Lloyd has carefully selected two Chinese Elms with contrasting but complementary characteristics.
The older tree provides the main focal point with its wonderfully textured bark, twisting trunk and highly refined branching. Meanwhile, the younger tree adds movement and interest through its exposed roots and elegant curves.
The positioning of the smaller bonsai to the right of the main tree is particularly effective, allowing the two trees to create one beautiful, unified landscape.
The result is a unique, artistically styled bonsai arrangement with a wonderful sense of age, character and natural beauty.
A Stunning Royal Blue Japanese Landscape Bonsai Pot
The presentation of this arrangement is exceptional.
Both Chinese Elm bonsai trees have been planted into a brand-new, very high-quality Japanese shallow oval landscape bonsai pot in a beautiful, rich royal blue.
The elegant, shallow proportions of the pot are particularly well suited to this style of planting. They allow the trees to become the main focal point while providing enough space for the arrangement to feel like a miniature landscape.
The vivid royal blue glaze contrasts beautifully with the natural tones of the trunks and the delicate green foliage.
Furthermore, the low, elongated shape emphasises the relationship between the two trees, enhancing the balance and flow of the composition.
It is a striking yet elegant presentation that brings together the beauty of traditional bonsai styling and Japanese ceramic craftsmanship.
Create Your Own Miniature Japanese Zen Garden
One of the most delightful features of this composition is the large tray beneath the bonsai pot.
The tray is filled with beautiful white gravel and comes complete with a bamboo rake, allowing you to create your own miniature Japanese Zen garden.
Inspired by traditional Japanese dry landscape gardens, known as karesansui, the white gravel can be carefully raked into flowing lines, gentle curves and circular patterns.
These designs can represent the movement of water, ripples across a pond or the peaceful flow of a stream.
The contrast between the rich royal blue bonsai pot and the white gravel is absolutely stunning.
You can change the patterns whenever you wish, creating a different miniature landscape to suit your mood.
The gentle, repetitive movement of raking the gravel can also be wonderfully relaxing, making this a beautiful decorative feature for a peaceful corner of your home.
The bamboo rake is included, so you can enjoy creating your own Zen-inspired designs straight away.
Naturally Miniature Chinese Elm Bonsai
Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia) is one of the most popular and rewarding bonsai species, and it is easy to understand why.
This beautiful species has naturally small, finely serrated leaves that are particularly well suited to miniature bonsai cultivation.
The delicate foliage allows even relatively small trees to develop the appearance of mature specimens growing in nature.
Chinese Elms also respond exceptionally well to pruning. With regular trimming, they produce increasingly fine branching and compact canopies.
Over time, mature specimens can develop wonderfully textured bark, adding another layer of age and character.
This makes Chinese Elm an excellent choice for artistic compositions such as this father and son landscape.
The naturally miniature leaves, beautifully twisting trunks and intricate branching all contribute to the remarkable realism of the arrangement.
An Easy-Care Bonsai for Beginners and Enthusiasts
Despite its sophisticated appearance, Chinese Elm is a relatively straightforward species to care for.
It is a particularly rewarding choice for anyone who appreciates beautifully styled bonsai but does not want an excessively demanding variety.
Chinese Elms enjoy plenty of natural daylight and respond well to regular watering, feeding and gentle pruning.
When kept indoors, we recommend a cool, bright room with good natural light. Avoid placing the bonsai close to radiators or other sources of intense heat.
Chinese Elms are naturally seasonal trees and may lose some or all of their leaves during autumn and winter, particularly when grown in cooler conditions. Fresh foliage will return as the growing season begins.
With suitable care, both trees can continue developing and maturing together, making this a particularly rewarding living landscape.
The Symbolism of a Father and Son Bonsai
A father and son bonsai arrangement is a particularly meaningful design.
The larger, older tree can represent strength, experience, wisdom and protection, while the younger tree symbolises growth, new beginnings and the next generation.
Together, they create a beautiful interpretation of family, continuity and the passing of knowledge from one generation to another.
This makes the composition an especially thoughtful gift for a father, grandfather or someone who appreciates the importance of family connections.
It is equally beautiful as a decorative piece, bringing a sense of harmony, tranquillity and natural artistry into the home.

Chinese Elm Bonsai Care
Position
Keep your Chinese Elm bonsai in a cool, bright room with plenty of natural daylight. A position near a bright window is ideal.
Chinese Elms also enjoy spending time outdoors in suitable conditions, although trees accustomed to indoor growing should be introduced gradually.
Protect from extreme temperatures and avoid placing the arrangement directly beside a radiator.
Watering
Check the compost regularly and water when the surface begins to feel slightly dry.
Water thoroughly, allowing excess moisture to drain away. Avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely, but equally, do not keep the compost permanently waterlogged.
As this arrangement contains two trees, check the moisture around both root systems.
The decorative white gravel tray is intended for creating Zen garden designs rather than holding standing water beneath the bonsai pot.
Feeding
Feed regularly during the active growing season with a suitable bonsai fertiliser.
Regular feeding helps support healthy foliage, strong growth and the continued development of fine branching.
Reduce feeding during the cooler months when growth naturally slows.
Pruning
Chinese Elms respond very well to pruning.
Trim extending shoots to maintain the beautifully refined shapes of both trees. The older bonsai already has excellent ramification, so gentle, selective trimming will help preserve its intricate branch structure.
The younger tree can also be pruned to maintain its attractive curves and ensure it continues to complement the larger bonsai.
Seasonal Changes
Chinese Elm is a naturally deciduous to semi-evergreen species, depending on its growing conditions.
During autumn and winter, the trees may develop seasonal colour and shed some or all of their leaves.
This is a natural part of their growth cycle, and fresh foliage will develop again when conditions become favourable.
A Truly Special Japanese-Inspired Bonsai Landscape
This Father and Son Chinese Elm Bonsai is a wonderfully artistic composition that combines age, character and beautiful miniature proportions.
The approximately 18-year-old main tree has exceptional presence, with its twisting cork bark trunk and highly refined branching. Alongside it, the smaller Chinese Elm introduces intricate exposed roots, elegant curves and a lovely sense of movement.
Together, they create a harmonious miniature landscape, beautifully presented in a rich royal blue Japanese ceramic pot.
The addition of the white gravel Zen garden and bamboo rake makes this arrangement even more special, allowing you to create peaceful water-inspired patterns around the bonsai.
Personally composed by Lloyd Noall at Bonsai Direct, this is a unique and very pretty living work of art. A wonderful choice for someone who appreciates traditional Japanese design, mature bonsai and the beauty of nature in miniature.
