The Cherry Blossom bonsai is a hardy deciduous outdoor tree, celebrated for its stunning seasonal variation. In spring, it produces delicate, butterfly-like flowers, followed by small ornamental cherry fruits in summer. As autumn arrives, its foliage transforms into a vibrant display of reds, oranges, and golds. This beautiful bonsai thrives best in a sheltered spot such as a garden, patio, or balcony, where it can be protected from harsh winds while enjoying the changing seasons. Its pink and white blossoms make it a favourite among bonsai fans, often called the “Flight of the Butterfly Tree” for its delicate beauty. Originating from Japan, where it’s known as “Sakura,” this bonsai symbolises the fleeting beauty of life. Easy to care for and extremely hardy, it thrives in sunlight and needs moist soil. The colour of the cream pot highlights its elegance. Beyond its beauty, the Cherry Blossom Bonsai carries deep meaning in Japanese culture, reminding us to treasure life’s fleeting moments.

Please Note: This bonsai must be kept outdoors. Due to the recent hot weather, our cherries are showing some leaf scorch in the form of  browning leaves. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about – new leaves will come through as expected.

Cherry Blossom Bonsai – A Spectacular Blossoming Hardy Bonsai Favourite

The Cherry Blossom Tree (Prunus kojo no mai), commonly known as the “Flight of the Butterfly Bonsai,” is a stunning variety of bonsai that is highly regarded for its delicate pink and white flowers and cheerful autumn cherries. This particular type of bonsai is native to Japan. It is often used in traditional Japanese gardens.

Secondly, the Cherry Fruiting and Flowering Bonsai is a popular choice among enthusiasts due to its beauty and easy care. The tree requires damp soil and regular feeding to promote healthy growth and a mass of spring blossom. It should also be placed in a location that receives plenty of sunlight. Either your garden, patio, or balcony – any outdoor space is suitable.

One of the most popular varieties of the Cherry Fruiting and Flowering Bonsai is the Prunus kojo no mai. This variety is known for its stunning pink and white flowers, which bloom in the early spring. The tree also produces small cherries that are a beautiful rich colour.

Introducing the Cherry Blossom Bonsai – Always a Favourite

The Cherry Blossom Bonsai, is a stunning and enchanting tree that captures hearts with its delicate beauty. It’s celebrated for its stunning cherry blossoms, often likened to graceful butterflies in flight. This bonsai holds profound Japanese symbolism, representing the fleeting nature of life.

Elegant Cherry Blossom Symbolism, Flowers and Cherry Fruits

The Cherry Blossom, or Sakura, is deeply symbolic in Japanese culture, representing the beauty and impermanence of life. The short-lived but magnificent blossoms inspire a sense of renewal, hope, and appreciation for life’s fleeting moments.

Also, in spring, the Cherry Tree Bonsai is literally covered with soft, pastel-pink/white blossoms resembling graceful butterflies.

In addition to its amazing flowers, this bonsai displays small, ornamental fruits (Cherries). These fruits symbolise abundance and prosperity, promising a fruitful future. The Cherry Blossom Bonsai has a beautiful tree meaning. It signifies fragility, the beauty of life, good fortune and future happiness.

Thus, the Cherry Blossom Bonsai is a wonderful gift for birthdays and anniversaries because it carries such a special tree meaning. Giving this bonsai as a gift shows your care and wishes for the person’s well-being and happiness. It’s a thoughtful and meaningful present that brings a touch of nature’s beauty with a beautiful meaning to their special day or celebration.

Please note: We grow our cherry blossom bonsai trees outside and they are a deciduous bonsai species. They should be grown outdoors as they are fully hardy. They are early Spring flowerers, so you should see new buds in February/March. When out of leaf they still exhibit a lovely structure. From spring budding you get wondrous soft pink/white blossom, followed by lush lime green leaves. During autumn you get cherry fruits and spectacular autumn red and golden hues.

Bonsai Variety

Prunus Incisa 'Kojo-no-mai' is a species of flowering plant in the family Rosacea. It is a very small Fuji Cherry tree with zig-zagging branches and an abundance of flowers. Just as winter ends in early March, the tree bursts into life with lots of white, delicate looking flowers with pink centres. The foliage is serrated, with new foliage having a bronzed tinge and taking on a bright orange colour in the autumn. A dainty slow-growing, early white-flowering cherry, in Japan it is highly regarded as an ornamental tree.

Ease of Growing Indoors

If there’s one bonsai that truly captures the essence of nature’s changing seasons, it has to be the Cherry Blossom Bonsai (Prunus ‘Kojo-no-mai’). “I’ve always adored cherry blossom trees,” says Sarah. “There’s something magical about the way they burst into bloom, filling the branches with delicate pinky white flowers.”

A Bonsai That Transforms Through the Seasons

One of the most captivating things about this bonsai is its ever-changing beauty. In early spring, soft pink and white flowers bloom like tiny butterfly wings, giving it the poetic name ‘The Flight of the Butterfly Tree’. As summer approaches, lush lime-green leaves replace the blossoms, creating a classic Cherry Tree silhouette. Then, as autumn arrives, the tree produces tiny cherries and glowing red and golden foliage, making it a stunning sight before winter. Even when bare, its elegantly twisted branches give it a striking winter silhouette.
“Interestingly, as the new twigs develop, they grow in a zig-zag formation, which gives the bonsai quite a unique and artistic form” comments Sarah.

A Symbol of Life’s Fleeting Beauty

In Japan, the Sakura (Cherry Blossom) is more than just a tree—it’s a symbol of the impermanence of life, a reminder to cherish beautiful moments before they pass. “Watching the flowers bloom is a special experience,” Sarah shares. “It happens for a couple of weeks in springtime, but that’s what makes it so precious—just like the fleeting joys in life.”

A Hardy Outdoor Bonsai That Thrives Year-Round

This bonsai is incredibly hardy and loves being outdoors in a sunny spot. It’s been grown outside and will flourish best in an outdoor setting. Sarah advises. “It needs that cold period with winter dormancy to stay healthy and bloom at its best in spring.”

The Perfect Bonsai for Any Collection

With its graceful styling, seasonal beauty, and deep cultural meaning, the Cherry Blossom Bonsai is a must-have for any bonsai lover. Planted in an elegant cream pot, it enhances the tree’s delicate charm.

“If you love trees that evolve with the seasons and tell a story through their changing leaves and blossoms, this bonsai is for you,” Sarah adds. “It’s a living work of art that keeps surprising you, year after year. It is also one of my personal favourites, so I may be a little bit biased”
