This charming 5-year-old Cuphea Bonsai (Cuphea hyssopifolia) is a wonderfully dainty flowering tree with elegant proportions, a slender characterful trunk and naturally tiny green leaves. Throughout the warmer months, masses of delicate purple flowers appear amongst the foliage, creating a colourful miniature display. This bonsai has been photographed late October 2026 and is showing beautiful blooms. It has flowered continuously throughout the year. This really demonstrates what an amazing, prolific and rewarding flowering bonsai species Cuphea is.

Easy to care for and responsive to pruning, Cuphea is an excellent choice for beginners. Presented in a soft, deep blue ceramic bonsai pot with a slightly lighter drip tray, this individually photographed bonsai is full of colour and character – and the exact tree shown is the tree you will receive.

Description

Flowering Cuphea Bonsai Tree | 5-Year-Old Dwarf Indoor Bonsai

Bring a cheerful splash of colour into your home with this individually photographed 5-year-old Cuphea Bonsai (Cuphea hyssopifolia). Naturally dainty and beautifully proportioned, this charming little bonsai combines a slender, characterful trunk with tiny leaves and an abundance of delicate purple flowers.

Standing approximately 29cm tall, its compact proportions make it a particularly convincing miniature tree. We have paired it with a deep blue ceramic bonsai pot and a matching ceramic drip tray, creating a wonderful contrast against the fresh green foliage and vibrant flowers.

Best of all, this bonsai has been individually photographed, so the tree you see is the exact tree you will receive.

Dainty, Natural Proportions

One of the things we particularly love about this Cuphea is its wonderfully delicate appearance. The slender trunk rises naturally into a finely branched canopy, while the species’ naturally tiny leaves keep everything beautifully in scale.

Rather than appearing heavy or overly styled, this tree has a light, graceful quality. Its fine branching and compact foliage create the impression of a much larger flowering tree viewed in miniature.

At five years old, it has already developed a lovely structure, with plenty of potential for further refinement as the trunk and branches continue to mature.

Masses of Tiny Purple Flowers

One of the greatest attractions of Cuphea hyssopifolia is its remarkably long flowering season.

Throughout the warmer months, tiny purple flowers appear amongst the fresh green foliage. Although each bloom is delicate, Cuphea flowers so generously that the canopy can become scattered with colour, creating the appearance of a miniature flowering tree in full bloom.

With the right conditions, flowering can continue from spring through summer and often well into autumn. Even when it isn’t flowering, the naturally small, glossy green leaves create an attractive and beautifully proportioned canopy.

An Excellent Bonsai for Beginners

Cuphea is naturally compact and responds extremely well to regular pruning, making it an excellent choice for someone new to bonsai.

New shoots can simply be trimmed back to maintain the shape of the canopy and encourage increasingly fine branching. Its steady growth also makes it rewarding to develop, as you can gradually refine the tree’s silhouette and structure over the years.

Experienced enthusiasts will equally appreciate its tiny foliage, delicate proportions and unusually generous flowering habit.

Where to Grow Your Cuphea Bonsai

Cuphea enjoys plenty of natural light and grows best indoors in a cool, bright room, conservatory or greenhouse.

During the warmer summer months, it can also enjoy a sheltered position outdoors. The additional natural light can encourage strong growth and an even more impressive display of flowers.

Water when the compost begins to feel dry, ensuring the rootball never becomes completely dry. Regular feeding during the growing season will support healthy foliage and encourage continued flowering.

Cuphea is a tender species and is not frost hardy, so always bring your bonsai back indoors well before colder temperatures arrive.

Meaning & Symbolism

With its seemingly endless succession of tiny flowers, Cuphea is associated with happiness, renewal and lasting beauty.

Its delicate appearance also makes it a particularly uplifting bonsai to give as a gift. Whether chosen for a birthday, anniversary, new home or simply to brighten someone’s day, it is a lovely living present that can continue to develop for many years.

A Rich Blue Ceramic Pot

We’ve chosen a deep, rich blue glazed ceramic bonsai pot for this tree, and the combination works beautifully.

The dark blue glaze contrasts wonderfully with the fresh green leaves and vivid purple flowers, giving the whole bonsai a bright, colourful appearance without distracting from the tree itself.

A slighter lighter-toned ceramic drip tray sits neatly beneath the pot to complete the presentation.
