Tall Flowering Fukien Tea Tree Bonsai | 12-Year-Old Carmona
An Elegant, Artistic Indoor Bonsai with Beautiful White Flowers
This impressive 12-year-old Fukien Tea Tree Bonsai (Carmona microphylla) is a wonderfully elegant indoor bonsai, combining a tall, artistic form with beautiful glossy foliage and delicate ice-white flowers.
Carmona is a particularly attractive species for bonsai. Its naturally small leaves, fine branching and mature-looking bark create excellent proportions, while its flowers provide a beautiful contrast against the deep green canopy.
At 12 years old, this is a more established tree with a tall, graceful silhouette that gives it real presence without appearing heavy or oversized. The tree is presented in a traditional mid-blue glazed ceramic bonsai pot, which complements the rich green foliage beautifully. An optional ceramic drip tray can also be added if required.
Beautiful Glossy Evergreen Foliage
One of the most distinctive features of the Fukien Tea Tree is its foliage.
The small, dark green leaves have an attractive glossy appearance and naturally grow in neat clusters along the branches. Their miniature size makes them particularly well suited to bonsai, helping to create the convincing proportions of a mature tree in miniature.
Look closely and you may notice tiny silvery-white markings on some of the leaves. These are a completely natural characteristic of Carmona and are caused by tiny corky cells within the leaf – they are not a pest or disease.
Because Carmona is evergreen, its attractive foliage can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Delicate Ice-White Flowers
The flowers are one of the reasons we love this species so much.
Tiny ice-white, star-shaped flowers appear amongst the dark foliage, creating a beautiful contrast against the leaves. Each individual flower is relatively short-lived; however, don’t be disappointed when one fades. New buds and flowers can develop remarkably quickly, allowing the tree to produce repeated flushes of blossom when it is happy and growing well.
Although flowering is often particularly noticeable during the warmer months, a healthy Fukien Tea can produce flowers at different times throughout the year.
The result is an indoor bonsai that is constantly changing. Fresh foliage, new buds and tiny white flowers all contribute to its delicate and artistic appearance.
A Tall & Artistic Indoor Bonsai
Carmona has been cultivated as bonsai for centuries and it is easy to understand why. Its naturally compact foliage, fine branching, flowers and increasingly characterful bark give the species many of the qualities we look for in a bonsai.
This particular 12-year-old tree has a taller, more elegant form. Rather than creating a compact, heavy appearance, its height draws the eye upwards through the trunk and branching into the canopy.
The proportions remain wonderfully refined, while the additional height gives the bonsai a strong presence when displayed on a table, desk, windowsill or bonsai stand.
Traditional Mid-Blue Ceramic Bonsai Pot
The rich green foliage and white flowers look particularly attractive against the traditional mid-blue glazed ceramic bonsai pot.
Blue is a classic choice for flowering bonsai because it provides colour without competing with the tree itself. The result is a balanced combination that looks equally at home in a traditional or contemporary interior.
A coordinating ceramic drip tray is available as an optional extra. This sits beneath the bonsai pot and provides a practical finishing touch when displaying your tree indoors.
Easy Everyday Care
Despite its sophisticated appearance, the Fukien Tea Tree is wonderfully straightforward to look after once you understand what it likes.
The most important thing is warmth and consistency. Position your Carmona in a warm, bright room with plenty of natural daylight and keep it away from cold draughts or sudden temperature changes. A warm lounge, kitchen or office can provide an excellent environment.
Watering is equally simple. Use your fingertip to check the soil and aim to keep it damp to the touch rather than soaking wet. Carmona dislikes sitting in continually saturated compost, so there is no need to water simply because a certain number of days have passed. Check the soil and let the tree tell you when it needs water.
With its manageable growth and good response to regular trimming, it makes a rewarding choice for someone beginning their bonsai journey.

Did You Know?
The Fukien Tea Tree takes its common name from Fujian – historically written as Fukien – in China. The species has a long association with Chinese bonsai and Penjing, the ancient Chinese art of creating miniature landscapes and artistically trained trees.
Another fascinating feature appears after successful flowering. Carmona is capable of producing tiny round fruits which gradually ripen to red, adding yet another dimension to this already beautiful flowering species.
As the tree matures, its bark can also become increasingly textured and fissured. Combined with its tiny leaves, this helps an older Carmona develop the convincing appearance of a much larger and more ancient tree.
Meaning & Symbolism
The Fukien Tea Tree is traditionally associated with courage and heart, as well as love and devotion. This beautiful symbolism, combined with its delicate white flowers, makes Carmona a particularly thoughtful bonsai to give as a living gift.
More broadly, bonsai represent harmony, balance and a connection with nature – qualities that make this elegant flowering tree equally enjoyable as a gift or as a special addition to your own home.
