Repotting bonsai trees serves several purposes. It can be for aesthetic reasons, such as changing the pot to enhance the tree’s appearance, or to replace a damaged pot. However, the primary reason is often that the tree has outgrown its current container. Repotting not only improves the tree’s visual appeal but also promotes healthy growth by providing more space for the roots to expand.
How to Tell If Your Bonsai Needs Repotting
To determine if your bonsai needs repotting, closely inspect the root system. If the roots are tightly packed with no visible soil, it’s time to repot. Carefully remove the tree from its pot to check if it is root-bound. If the roots are circling the inside of the pot with little room to grow, your bonsai needs repotting or root pruning, or a larger pot.
When and How Often to Repot Bonsai
The timing of repotting depends on the species of your bonsai and whether it is an indoor or outdoor variety. Indoor bonsai trees typically require repotting between May and September, while outdoor trees are best repotted in March. Older bonsai need repotting less frequently, every 3-5 years, whereas younger trees need it more often. Fast-growing species like the Chinese Elm may need annual repotting or root pruning, whereas slower-growing varieties like the Fukien Tea Tree may only need it every other year.
