Why Do We Need To Repot Bonsai Trees?
There are various reasons why we would want or need to repot bonsai trees. Sometimes, it’s just for a change in how it looks, or maybe because the old pot has become damaged and needs replacing. But most of the time, it’s because the tree has outgrown its current pot or its roots have filled up all the space. Repotting not only makes the bonsai look fresh again but also helps it grow better, especially if it gets a bit more space in a slightly bigger pot.
How Do I Know If My Bonsai Is “Pot Bound”?
Over time, all potted plants, including bonsai trees, can become “pot bound.” This means the soil in the pot is packed full of roots, leaving no room for new growth. When this happens, the tree can’t grow anymore, and it might even start to deteriorate. Checking if your bonsai is pot bound is simple: just take it out of its pot and look at the roots. If they’re all tangled up and the soil is solid, it’s probably time to either trim the roots or move it to a bigger pot.
When Should I Repot My Bonsai?
The best time to repot a bonsai depends on whether it’s an indoor or outdoor tree and what kind of tree it is. Indoor bonsai are usually repotted between May and September, while outdoor ones do better in March, before they start growing new buds. Outdoor evergreens like pines and junipers also do well with repotting in spring. Older bonsai usually need repotting every 3-5 years, but younger ones might need it more often, especially if they grow fast like Chinese Elms. Slower growing species like the Fukien Tea Tree may not need repotting as regularly.
