Bonsai Tree Repotting Guide:
Why do we repot bonsai?
Repotting your bonsai tree isn’t just about making it look nice; it’s also about keeping it healthy and helping it to flourish. Whether you want to change its appearance or give its roots more room to spread out, repotting is very important. As time goes on, bonsai trees can get too big for their pots or their roots can get too crowded, which stops them from growing well. Repotting lets the roots spread out and grow better, which keeps the bonsai healthy and lively.
How do you detect a pot-bound bonsai?
To tell if your bonsai is pot-bound, check if the soil is packed down and if there are lots of roots crowded in the pot. Gently taking the bonsai out of its pot can show you if it’s pot-bound. If you see these signs, it’s time to think about repotting. Remember, how often you need to repot depends on the type of bonsai and how fast it grows. Some bonsai, like the Fukien Tea Tree, grow slowly and don’t need repotting as often as fast-growing ones like the Chinese Elm. Older bonsai usually need repotting less often than younger ones as they grow slower.
When is the right time to repot?
Picking the right time to repot is important. Indoor bonsai trees are usually repotted in the warmer months, from May to September. Outdoor deciduous bonsai trees should be repotted in March, before their buds start to grow. Evergreen outdoor bonsai like pines and junipers are best repotted around March too, when spring starts. Keep an eye on the weather because it can affect when it’s best to repot.
What is included in the repotting kit?
Our special bonsai repotting kits have everything you need for a successful repotting job. Each kit comes with a detailed guide to repotting, mesh to help water drain out of the pot, wire to hold the bonsai in place, a chopstick to help with the soil, and soil for the roots. And the best part? These kits are free, so you can repot your bonsai without any worries.
