Bougainvillea Bonsai with Hot Pink/Purple Flowers
The Bougainvillea glabra is one of the most eye-catching flowering bonsai species, admired for its vibrant colour and striking presence. Native to Brazil, this tropical climber adapts beautifully to bonsai cultivation, producing a compact tree full of energy and charm. This gorgeous little bonsai comes potted in a forest green ceramic pot with matching drip tray.
The most distinctive feature of Bougainvillea glabra is its abundant bracts, which look like brightly coloured flowers. These papery bracts, usually shades of vivid pink, purple, or magenta, surround tiny white tubular blooms, creating a dramatic and long-lasting display. Its glossy green leaves are small and pointed, perfectly in proportion for bonsai styling. With careful training, Bougainvillea develops a gnarled trunk and strong branch structure, offering contrast between rugged character and delicate colour.

Positioning Your Bonsai
Bougainvillea thrives in a warm, bright position, ideally in full sun, which encourages the best flowering. In the UK, it is best grown as an indoor bonsai in a conservatory, greenhouse, or bright windowsill, although it can be placed outdoors in summer when temperatures are warm. Protect it from frost, as this species is not cold hardy.
