Description

13-Year-Old Fruiting Evergreen Chinese Juniper Bonsai | Twisty Trunk Excellence Range

This 13-year-old Chinese Juniper Bonsai (Juniperus chinensis) is a superb example of natural elegance and refined styling. Its beautifully twisted trunk has matured with age, developing reddish, naturally flaked bark that gives it a weathered, ancient look — full of charm and authenticity.

Compact yet powerful, this bonsai has a commanding presence. Its winding trunk tells a story of patience and artistry, while the neat evergreen foliage creates balance and calm — a true living sculpture.

Beautifully Styled & Perfectly Presented

Potted in an ivory oval ceramic bonsai pot, this tree exudes both tradition and contemporary flair. The glossy glaze enhances the natural tones of the bark and foliage, giving it a clean, modern finish that suits any space outdoors in a sheltered garden spot.
The contrast between the tree’s rugged bark and the smooth cream glaze of the pot gives this bonsai real visual depth. It feels as elegant as it is strong.

Species Spotlight — Chinese Juniper Bonsai (Juniperus chinensis)

The Chinese Juniper is one of the most celebrated bonsai species in the world, cherished by bonsai enthusiasts for centuries. It’s hardy, evergreen, and forgiving, making it an ideal choice for beginners and collectors alike.

Here are some fascinating facts about this timeless species:

  • Evergreen foliage: The Juniper’s scale-like leaves stay lush and green all year.

  • Fruiting habit: Mature specimens can develop tiny blue-purple berries, adding seasonal interest.

  • Ancient symbolism: In Japan and China, Junipers symbolise protection, strength, and resilience.

Maintenance
Positioning: Place in a bright outdoor position. It loves full sun but appreciates a little protection from the strongest midday heat in high summer.
Watering: Allow the top of the soil to dry slightly between watering. Water thoroughly and let excess drain away. Check daily in warm weather.
Feeding: Apply a balanced bonsai fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season, following the instructions on the bottle.
Pruning: Pinch back soft new growth to maintain shape and encourage dense foliage pads. Carry out structural pruning in late winter.
Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years in early spring using a free-draining, gritty bonsai soil mix.
Note: Keep outdoors year-round. Protect from prolonged freezing conditions and strong, drying winter winds.

Bonsai Variety

Chinese Juniper (Juniperus chinensis)
A bonsai favourite. This wonderful evergreen bonsai has it all - naturally small foliage, incredible character throughout the trunk and branches, it’s evergreen and has beautiful flaky bark. The juvenile foliage of the juniper is spiky but as it matures soft ‘pads’ of foliage are formed. The juniper responds very well to training by pruning and wiring. Please be careful to check the wire weekly to prevent scaring. Junipers will tolerate a very sunny position and like to be kept on the dry side, in a free draining soil. Very hardy.
