Description

This beautiful 11-year-old Flowering Pyracantha bonsai, commonly known as Firethorn, combines elegant styling with spectacular seasonal interest. Standing approximately 35cm in height, it features a wonderfully flowing S-shaped trunk that creates movement, balance and maturity throughout the composition.

This is the exact bonsai tree you will receive.

The trunk rises gracefully before developing dramatic curves and twists that give the tree its distinctive character. Above, a balanced canopy of small evergreen leaves creates a refined silhouette that looks attractive throughout the year.

To complement the design, Lloyd has recently repotted this Pyracantha into a brand-new cream rectangular ceramic bonsai pot. The soft neutral tones of the pot work beautifully with both the foliage and seasonal berry displays, creating a presentation that feels elegant and timeless.

A Bonsai Full of Seasonal Beauty

Pyracantha is one of the most rewarding outdoor bonsai species because it offers interest throughout the year.

During spring, the branches become covered with clusters of tiny white flowers. These delicate blossoms create a spectacular display and bring a softness that contrasts beautifully with the tree’s rugged structure.

As the season progresses, the flowers give way to vibrant orange berries that gradually develop across the branches. These colourful fruits remain on the tree for many weeks, often well into autumn and early winter, creating a stunning display against the dark green foliage.

The result is a bonsai that continually changes and rewards careful observation throughout the seasons.

Fragrant White Spring Flowers

In late spring, the Pyracantha bursts into bloom with masses of small white flowers.

The blossoms appear in dense clusters across the canopy, creating a cloud-like display that signals the beginning of the growing season. Each flower is delicate and lightly fragrant, attracting pollinating insects such as bees and hoverflies.

When the tree is in full bloom, the contrast between the bright flowers and glossy foliage is particularly striking.

Vibrant Orange Berries

Following the flowering display, clusters of bright orange berries begin to develop.

These colourful fruits become one of the tree’s most attractive features. Their vibrant colour adds warmth and brightness to the bonsai while creating a dramatic contrast against the evergreen leaves.

The berries often remain on the tree for an extended period, providing months of additional interest and making Pyracantha one of the most colourful bonsai species available.

Glossy Evergreen Foliage

Unlike many flowering and fruiting bonsai species, Pyracantha remains evergreen.

Its small glossy leaves provide colour and structure throughout the year. The dense foliage creates a beautiful backdrop for both flowers and berries while maintaining an attractive appearance during every season.

As a result, the tree never loses its visual appeal.

The Meaning of Pyracantha Bonsai

At Bonsai Direct, Pyracantha bonsai symbolise strength, protection, resilience and vitality.

Its thorny branches reflect determination and endurance, while the abundance of flowers and berries represents prosperity and reward following patience and effort.

These qualities make the Firethorn bonsai a meaningful gift as well as a rewarding addition to your own collection.

Easy Care for Beginners

Pyracantha is an excellent choice for beginners because it is both hardy and forgiving.

Position your bonsai outdoors in a bright, sunny location. Water thoroughly whenever the soil begins to dry and apply bonsai fertiliser weekly throughout the growing season.

Regular pruning will help maintain the shape and encourage dense branching.

With minimal effort, this rewarding species will continue to provide flowers, berries and evergreen beauty year after year.

Maintenance
Position: Place your Pyracantha bonsai outdoors in a bright, sunny spot. It thrives in full sun, which encourages strong growth, abundant flowers, and vibrant berries. It can tolerate partial shade, but flowering may reduce.
Watering: Check the soil regularly and water when the top layer begins to dry. Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and berry development. Do not allow it to dry out completely, but avoid waterlogging.
Feeding: Feed every week during the growing season (spring to early autumn) with a balanced bonsai fertiliser. This supports healthy growth, flowering, and berry production.
Pruning and Maintenance: Trim new shoots regularly to maintain shape and encourage dense branching. Prune more carefully during flowering and fruiting periods to preserve blooms and berries. Pyracantha responds well to shaping.
Seasonal Care: Pyracantha is a hardy outdoor bonsai. It produces small white flowers in late spring, followed by bright berries in autumn. Protect from extreme frost and harsh winds in winter by placing it in a sheltered position.
