“Many years ago, I visited Montepulciano — that beautiful medieval town high in the Tuscan hills — and the memory has stayed with me ever since. Just beyond its stone streets, I wandered up to a rocky outcrop where an old olive tree stood alone, rooted into the landscape as if it had always been there. It was peaceful, timeless. I remember sitting beneath it as the sun set, the rocks still warm from the day’s heat, and thinking: this is what stillness feels like.
That moment became the inspiration for this 15-year-old Olive Bonsai. From the pale cream oval pot to the natural rocks nestled around the base, everything about this tree reminds me of that hillside — its quiet strength, its sun-drenched beauty. Now, it’s covered in small olive fruits and has the soft silvery leaves that always make me think of Tuscany. This isn’t just a tree — it’s a memory, lovingly shaped over time.”
Features:
- Trunk: The trunk rises from strong roots and forks to produce spreading branches. It has good strength and lovely white tones.
- Foliage: Silvery evergreen leaves are a personal favourite. The leaves of the olive tree (Olea europaea) are slender and elongated. They have a glossy, dark green upper surface that contrasts beautifully with a silvery-grey underside, giving them a distinctive two-tone appearance. The leaves are narrow and lance-shaped, with a smooth texture and a slight curve, allowing them to catch the light and shimmer gently.
- Flowers & Fruits
- Flowers: The olive bonsai produces small, delicate flowers that are typically creamy white or light yellow. These blossoms appear in clusters and emit a subtle, pleasant fragrance. They add a charming quality to the tree, enhancing its overall aesthetic during the blooming season.
- Fruits: Following the flowering period, the bonsai develops small, green olives that gradually mature to a deep purple or black hue. These fruits not only add visual interest but also symbolise the tree’s vitality and productivity. The presence of both flowers and fruits on the tree throughout the year offers a dynamic and ever-changing display.
- Pot: Potted in a glossy ivory cream bonsai pot with natural rocks, which complements the foliage and adds a touch of sophistication to the overall presentation. Supplied with a matching ceramic drip tray to catch any watering drips.
Symbolism:
The olive tree is one of the most beloved and sacred trees, symbolising peace and friendship.
Positioning:
Ideal for both indoor and outdoor settings, but should be protected from hard winter frosts. This bonsai is perfect for beginners, being easy to care for. The best place for an olive bonsai is outside during the summer and in a cool room or conservatory during the cooler months. It can thrive in a conservatory all year round, though it requires more frequent watering in the summer.
Watering:
The olive tree prefers to be on the drier side. Keep the top of the soil barely damp to the touch, with a little dampness lower in the soil. This species does not like to be wet.
Additional Information:
Supplied with the Bonsai Direct care handbook.

Olive Bonsai (Olea europaea)
The olive makes a superb bonsai which can be grown either indoors or outdoors during warmer months. A fabulous evergreen variety which sports beautiful silvery green smooth-edged leaves. A Mediterranean tree with strong symbolic significance and renowned for being able to survive in dry conditions with poor soil and little nutrition.
A great variety for beginners due to its ease of care. The flowers are particularly spectacular and are followed by fruits on more mature specimens. Please protect olive bonsai from hard frosts during winter months. They prefer a bright position and the soil should be kept damp and not too wet.
The olive bonsai tree is particularly beautiful due to its unique combination of graceful form and rich symbolism. Its slender, silvery-green leaves create a striking contrast against the gnarled, textured bark. As a slow-growing tree, it develops character over time, with age often reflected in its naturally aged trunk and intricate root structure.
Please note: The wire over the rock is purely to secure the rock during transportation. It can be removed once the bonsai has been delivered.
