The Fukien Tea – A Bonsai with Charm and Character
The Fukien Tea Tree, scientifically known as Ehretia micropylla (formerly Carmona microphylla), is a captivating bonsai that brings year-round beauty to indoor spaces. Native to southeastern China’s Fujian province, this tropical evergreen is renowned for its elegant structure, glossy foliage, and delicate white blooms.
One of the Fukien Tea’s most striking features is its small, dark green leaves. These glossy, oval-shaped leaves are covered in tiny hairs and maintain their luster throughout the year, creating a dense and compact canopy. The foliage is complemented by dainty white flowers with five petals, which appear sporadically and can bloom almost year-round. While less common, these flowers may develop into small red berries, adding an extra layer of visual interest.
The trunk of the Fukien Tea bonsai is particularly noteworthy. Starting with an attractive light brown colour, the bark develops a unique character as it ages. It turns dark brown with warty elevated areas, forming a cracked, fissured appearance that gives the tree a sense of maturity and wisdom.
Thriving in warm indoor environments, the Fukien Tea bonsai prefers bright, indirect sunlight and temperatures between 12°C to 24°C. It’s essential to keep this species away from cold drafts and maintain consistent care to ensure its health and beauty.
Interestingly, despite its name, the Fukien Tea is not used for making tea.
