Caring for your Ficus Banyan Bonsai Tree

Caring for your Ficus retusa Banyan Bonsai Tree is easy. This tropical tree is not overly fussy about location but best practice is a bright position with indirect sunlight. Having said that this species will grow very well in darker rooms too. Ensure the soil is kept consistently moist but not waterlogged by watering when the topsoil feels dry to the touch.

Pruning is essential to maintain its shape and promote healthy growth; trim back new shoots to encourage a dense canopy and remove any dead or yellowing leaves. Sometimes you will notice a little white sap when you prune this species. This is perfectly normal and nothing to be concerned with. The white sap that appears when pruning a Ficus bonsai tree is latex, a milky substance produced by the tree. This latex is a natural defense mechanism that helps the tree protect itself from pests and pathogens by sealing the pruning wound and deterring insects with its bitter taste. While not harmful to the tree, the sap can be irritating to human skin. Personally I have pruned hundreds and never experienced anything and nor have any of my colleagues; but is is worthy to note. If you come into contact with the latex, it’s advisable to wash your hands to avoid any potential irritation.

Fertilise weekly if using a liquid bonsai fertiliser, to provide the necessary nutrients. Additionally, periodic repotting every 2-3 years will help prevent root-bound conditions and refresh the soil. By following these care guidelines, your Ficus Retusa will remain a vibrant and striking addition to your indoor garden.
