A very pretty starter Hazel bonsai tree (Corylus avellana) with little Hazelnut fruits as they mature. It is well known for its long, yellow catkins The male catkins light up any scene in late winter and produce a lovely splash of unseasonal colour. This particular little bonsai has superb branches and lovely movement within the trunk flow.
A beautiful raft-style bonsai. In raft style, the trunk runs along the ground and illustrates a tree in nature that has been blown over by the wind, taken root and had its branches on the upward side continue growth as new trunks.
The bark of Hazel Trees is dark brown and smooth in young trees and cracked on mature trees
In February, the beautiful male catkins, resembling lambs tails, which have been growing since the previous autumn start to shed yellow pollen.
The nuts, which begin pale green, develop from the female catkins which lie further back on branches and resemble green buds. They have a red tip to them known as ‘styles’.
Hazel has a reputation as a magical tree. A hazel rod is supposed to protect against evil spirits, as well as being used as a wand and for water-divining. In some parts of England, hazelnuts were carried as charms and/or held to ward off rheumatism. In Ireland, hazel was known as the ‘Tree of Knowledge’, and in medieval times it was a symbol of fertility.
A charming beginners starter bonsai to grow on and develop.
