12-Year-Old Jade Money Tree Bonsai | Exceptional Root Flare & Powerful Trunk
A Magnificent 12-Year-Old ‘Good Luck Tree’
This exceptional 12-year-old Jade Money Tree Bonsai (Portulacaria afra) is a powerful little tree with tremendous character. Its outstanding root flare, substantial trunk and jewel-like succulent foliage combine to give it the appearance of a much older tree in miniature.
Often known as the ‘Good Luck Tree’ or Money Tree Bonsai, Portulacaria afra is associated with prosperity, abundance and positive growth. It is also one of the easiest indoor bonsai to care for, making this mature specimen just as suitable for a beginner as it is for an experienced bonsai enthusiast.
This is the exact bonsai you will receive. We have photographed it individually so you can choose your tree with complete confidence.
Exceptional Nebari & a Strong, Powerful Trunk
The root flare of this particular bonsai is exceptional and immediately draws the eye.
Known as nebari in bonsai, the visible surface roots spread outwards from the base of the tree before flowing naturally into its substantial trunk. Good nebari is highly desirable because it gives a bonsai a feeling of age, strength and stability.
Above the roots, the powerful trunk has excellent taper and character. Its strong lines contrast beautifully with the softer canopy above, creating a well-balanced bonsai with plenty of visual presence.
As Portulacaria afra matures, its bark also develops greater texture and an attractive aged appearance, adding even more character to the tree.
Beautiful Gem-Like Succulent Foliage
One of the most charming characteristics of the Jade Money Tree is its foliage. Small, fleshy leaves cover the branches, creating a lush green canopy.
The leaves have a wonderfully glossy, almost polished appearance and resemble tiny green jewels. Their rounded form softens the strength of the trunk and roots below, creating an attractive contrast between the different elements of the tree.
Children particularly love the tactile, chunky foliage, which also makes the Jade Money Tree a lovely introduction to the world of bonsai.
Brand-New Leaden Blue Pot with Cloud Feet
We have planted this special bonsai into a brand-new leaden blue rectangular ceramic bonsai pot with a matching drip tray.
The understated blue glaze creates a beautiful contrast against the rich emerald foliage, while the rectangular shape provides a strong visual foundation for the substantial trunk and impressive root flare.
Traditional cloud feet raise the pot slightly from the surface and add an elegant finishing detail. Together, the bonsai, pot and tray form a beautifully balanced display ready to enjoy in the home.
An Exceptionally Easy Bonsai to Care For
If you are new to bonsai or simply have a busy lifestyle, the Jade Money Tree is a superb choice.
Portulacaria afra originates from the dry regions of southern Africa. Its fleshy leaves and stems naturally store water, allowing the tree to tolerate much drier conditions than many traditional indoor bonsai varieties.
As a result, it needs considerably less frequent watering. In fact, allowing the compost to dry between waterings is important for keeping a Jade bonsai healthy.
This forgiving nature makes it particularly suitable for beginners, busy households, students and children who want to experience growing a bonsai without a demanding watering routine.
The Fascinating ‘Clean Air Tree’
Portulacaria afra has also attracted considerable interest for its ability to absorb and store carbon as it grows. In its natural environment, vast areas of this species can play an important role in carbon sequestration.
This fascinating characteristic has helped earn it the nickname ‘Clean Air Tree’ and adds another interesting dimension to an already unusual bonsai species.
Symbolism of Luck, Prosperity & New Beginnings
The Jade Money Tree has long been associated with positive symbolism. Its rounded, coin-like leaves have helped establish its connection with wealth, abundance and prosperity.
It is also associated with good fortune, positive growth and new beginnings. For this reason, we like to think of it as our ‘Good Luck Bonsai’.
Its symbolism makes it a particularly thoughtful tree for a new home, birthday, student, new job or business opening. It can also make a meaningful gift for someone embarking on an exciting new chapter in their life.

Jade Money Tree Bonsai Care
Position
Place your Jade Money Tree indoors in a cool, bright room where it receives plenty of natural light. A bright windowsill or position close to a window is ideal. Avoid placing the bonsai immediately beside a radiator.
Watering
The succulent leaves and stems naturally hold reserves of moisture, so this bonsai does not need watering as frequently as many other indoor varieties.
Allow the compost to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly. Avoid keeping the compost permanently wet and never leave the bonsai standing in water.
Feeding
Feed regularly during spring and summer with a suitable bonsai fertiliser to encourage healthy growth. Reduce feeding as growth naturally slows during the cooler months.
Pruning
The Jade Money Tree responds well to pruning. Trim extending shoots during the growing season to maintain the shape of the canopy and encourage compact growth.
Repotting
Repot when the roots begin to fill the container. Use a free-draining bonsai compost and take particular care not to overwater following repotting.
