Choose Your Bonsai Species
– Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia)
The Chinese Elm is one of the most popular indoor bonsai varieties thanks to its forgiving nature and miniature woodland appearance. It features a naturally twisty s-shaped trunk, rich green serrated leaves and a balanced canopy. Indoors, it stays evergreen and grows steadily throughout the year, making it a wonderful choice for beginners who want reliability and beauty in equal measure.
– Fukien Tea Tree (Carmona microphylla)
The Fukien Tea Tree is loved for its glossy leaves, artistic trunk movement and delicate white summer flowers. It brings a slightly more ornamental look, with pretty blooms and a smooth-textured trunk. This species grows happily indoors in a warm, bright room and rewards its owner with flowers, character and year-round interest.

Lloyd Noall’s Expert Opinion
“I’ve grown Chinese Elms for nearly forty years, and this particular size has always been one of my favourites. At around 16 years old, the tree has enough maturity to show real character — a proper S-shaped trunk, good taper, and nicely spaced branches — yet it’s still compact enough to live happily on a windowsill, desk, or sideboard. Although we call it a ‘large’ Chinese Elm, it’s not a dramatic or oversized bonsai. It’s simply big enough to look impressive, without overwhelming the room.
What I enjoy most about trees of this age is how settled they feel. They’ve gone past the juvenile stage, they’ve developed their structure, and they respond beautifully to simple, regular pruning. If someone wants a bonsai that looks established straight away, but still fits comfortably into everyday living spaces, this is the size I always recommend. It’s a lovely, honest tree — easy to understand, enjoyable to work with, and full of potential for the years ahead.”
