Lawson’s Cypress Bonsai (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana) | Hardy Evergreen Treasure
Step into the captivating story of the Lawson’s Cypress, a tree with deep roots in history and nature. Discovered by European Americans near Port Orford, Oregon, in the 1850s, this magnificent species was introduced to cultivation in 1854 by collectors working for Charles Lawson of the renowned Lawson & Son nursery in Edinburgh, Scotland. Native to the misty coastal regions of Oregon and northwestern California, the full-sized Lawson’s Cypress can soar to a towering 220 feet and live up to 600 years.
Once prized for its light, strong, and rot-resistant timber, especially in shipbuilding and construction, this majestic tree now finds new life as a miniature masterpiece—a bonsai that captures its timeless beauty in an exquisite, manageable form.
This particular bonsai stands 58 cm tall, gracefully potted in a traditional blue-glazed ceramic pot that complements its rich, natural hues. Its strong, flowing trunk forks beautifully, a testament to its elegant design and expert cultivation.
