This beautifully styled Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia) bonsai is a true statement piece, combining refined proportions with elegant, artistic form. Its rich, deep green foliage is shaped across expertly positioned branches, forming a graceful, airy canopy.
The standout feature of this bonsai is its incredible natural hollow at the top of the trunk – a striking, hollowed section of the trunk that adds dramatic visual interest and tells the story of age and resilience. The powerful, beautifully tapered, woodland-style and exposed roots enhance the tree’s character and flow, creating a beautifully balanced and captivating structure.
“Ned is around 17 years old now, and I’ve spent many years developing his incredible structure. His multiple exposed roots rise from the soil in a powerful, forked formation before merging into a sturdy trunk flow, around 3.5 cm in diameter – which is quite remarkable for a bonsai of just 29 cm in height. Achieving this kind of strength in such a compact stature takes patience, years of careful cultivation in larger pots, and then gradually reducing down to create this refined form.
At the top of the trunk, there’s a beautiful natural hollow – a feature I was inspired to create after visiting Killerton National Trust Park near Exeter, where many ancient trees display such timeless weathering. I wanted Ned to carry that same sense of age and maturity.
From this strong trunk radiate five well-placed branches, each contributing to a canopy with excellent ramification and beautifully neat foliage pads. The small leaf proportions make him especially captivating, and I’ve encouraged this refinement through years of selective pruning.
I will be genuinely sad to see Ned leave the nursery, as he’s a tree full of presence and character. My hope is that his new owner will not only admire his power and artistry but also find inspiration in his natural beauty – and enjoy him as much as I have.”
Presented in a teal blue ceramic pot with a matching drip tray, this colour combination beautifully complements the vibrant tones of the leaves and adds a modern, sophisticated touch.
