Location: Larch bonsai thrive best outdoors in full sun, which promotes strong growth and vibrant needle colour.
Watering: These trees prefer consistently damp soil, but they should not be waterlogged. Regular watering is essential, especially during the growing season.
Pruning: Prune regularly to maintain shape and encourage a dense, compact form. Pinching back new growth helps control size and improve branching.
Wiring: Wiring can be done to shape the branches, but it's best performed in late winter or early spring before new growth starts.
Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years in early spring, using well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Do this before the buds start to swell.
Feeding: Feed weekly during the growing season with a quality bonsai fertiliser.

Larch (Larix) Larch trees make beautiful bonsai. During winter the branches are bare revealing intricate branch and twig structures. When spring comes, small bright green needle shaped leaves appear around the buds, giving the appearance of small green flowers. After watering little globules of water are trapped in the centre of the leaves, which sparkle in the sunlight. The foliage darkens during summer and in autumn turns bright gold. The bark also has great character. The Larch is easy to shape using pruning and wiring techniques.
