Caring for Fukien Tea Tree bonsai, scientifically known as Carmona microphylla
Watering
Water the bonsai regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Check the soil daily; when it feels barely damp, water it thoroughly. Avoid letting the tree sit in excess water to prevent root rot and yellowing leaves. Water generously during the growing season, usually every few days, and less frequently in winter.
Light and Temperature
Place the bonsai near a window where it can get several hours of indirect sunlight each day. Avoid direct midday sunlight to prevent leaf scorch. Keep the tree at around 70°F (20°C) and protect it from cold drafts.
Humidity
Keep the bonsai’s humidity high, especially in winter. Mist the leaves regularly and place the bonsai on a humidity tray with water and pebbles to boost moisture.
Feeding
Fertilise with a balanced organic fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season (spring to autumn). Reduce feeding in winter. Use a high-nitrogen fertiliser in spring to support new growth.
Pruning and Repotting
Prune regularly to shape the bonsai and encourage a dense canopy. Trim young shoots to two or three leaves. Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Repot every two years with a well-draining soil mix, such as peat, grit, and leaf mould.
