This impressive 13-year-old Ulmus parvifolia offers real strength and presence, making it an excellent indoor bonsai for beginners. The trunk measures around 3.5cm in diameter and rises with strong twists, giving the tree a bold and confident character. Although mature, it stands at a compact 40cm, resulting in a wonderfully squat and powerful stature that feels grounded and timeless.
We photographed this exact tree in the middle of April 2026, and you can clearly see the fresh new-season foliage. Maintenance
Position the tree in a bright place with good airflow. Water when the soil begins to dry. Apply bonsai fertiliser weekly to encourage strong growth and fine branching. Chinese Elms adapt well, so they are not fussy about specific locations, but avoid extreme draughts for best results. Another great product that I can high recommend is bonsai mist. Bonsai mist is a superb addition as it foliar feeds, conditions the leaves and aids humidity when the heating is on.
