Description

Spectacular 19-Year-Old Large Ficus Bonsai – A Truly Artistic Specimen

This sensational 19-year-old Ficus retusa is a magnificent specimen indoor bonsai, combining impressive stature with extraordinary trunk and root character.

Standing an impressive 54cm tall, with a substantial trunk measuring nearly 4cm in diameter, this is a large and commanding bonsai with genuine presence. Its powerful twisting trunk, spectacular aerial roots and beautifully developed nebari create the appearance of an ancient tropical tree in miniature.

Above this incredible base sits a fresh, lush canopy of glossy green leaves, giving the tree wonderful balance and creating a striking contrast against the silver-grey tones and natural striations of the mature bark.

This is a bonsai designed to be noticed. It would make a spectacular living feature within a home, office, reception area or foyer.

Incredible Aerial Roots & Powerful Nebari

For us, the aerial roots are undoubtedly one of the most impressive features of this tree.

Ficus trees are famous for their ability to produce aerial roots. In their natural tropical environment, these roots can develop from the trunk and branches before growing downwards towards the ground. Over time, they thicken and become an integral part of the tree’s structure.

This 19-year-old specimen has developed a magnificent collection of exposed aerial roots. They twist and flow into the soil, creating tremendous depth, texture and maturity.

It is precisely this sort of mature character that makes an older Ficus so captivating.

A Magnificent Twisting Trunk

Follow the tree upwards and there is even more to admire.

The substantial trunk oozes character as it rises towards the canopy, with natural movement that prevents such a large tree from ever appearing heavy or cumbersome.

Silver-grey markings and striations across the bark add further texture and interest, while excellent branch placement creates a balanced and meticulously styled composition.

The result is wonderfully artistic. Every section of the tree has something different to appreciate, from the mass of exposed roots at soil level to the twisting trunk and lush canopy above.

Lush, Glossy Evergreen Foliage

Ficus retusa is particularly well suited to bonsai because of its attractive foliage and ability to develop a dense canopy.

Its glossy green leaves provide year-round colour indoors and contrast beautifully with the pale, characterful trunk.

Regular trimming helps maintain the tree’s proportions and encourages increasingly dense branching. Despite standing 54cm tall, the foliage and branching retain the sense of scale that makes the tree look like a mature tropical tree recreated in miniature.

A Fruiting Variety of Fig

There is another interesting characteristic hidden behind the familiar Ficus name – this is a species of Fig.

Under favourable conditions, mature Ficus can produce tiny fig-like fruits. Although fruiting cannot be guaranteed when grown indoors, it is a fascinating natural characteristic of the species and another reason Ficus makes such an interesting bonsai to own.

The Fig also has beautiful symbolism and has long been associated with health, fertility and love.

This makes such an established tree particularly meaningful as a special birthday, anniversary, wedding or new-home gift – although we think this specimen is equally tempting as a statement tree for your own collection.

Impressive Yet Surprisingly Easy to Care For

For a bonsai with such an extraordinary appearance, Ficus retusa is remarkably straightforward to care for.

It is one of the most adaptable indoor bonsai species and an excellent choice for beginners. Ficus appreciates a bright indoor position but is also more tolerant of lower indoor light levels than many other bonsai varieties.

It enjoys the relatively stable temperatures found within our homes and offices and responds extremely well to regular pruning.

There are no complicated techniques required to simply enjoy this tree. Provide an appropriate indoor position, check its watering regularly and trim new growth as required to maintain its beautiful shape.

Its forgiving nature makes Ficus an excellent introduction to bonsai, while a specimen of this age and quality offers more than enough character to excite an experienced collector.

Forest Green Ceramic Bonsai Pot & Matching Tray

A tree of this stature deserves a pot that complements rather than overwhelms it.

We have paired this specimen with a beautiful brand-new forest green oval ceramic bonsai pot. The rich green glaze works particularly well with the foliage while highlighting the silver-grey striations and lighter tones within the trunk and exposed roots.

The oval shape also provides a broad, understated foundation for the tree, allowing the spectacular root structure to remain completely visible.

A matching ceramic drip tray is included, completing this impressive indoor display.

A Statement Bonsai for Home, Office or Foyer

At 54cm tall, this is considerably more substantial than a typical indoor bonsai.

Its height, broad canopy and commanding trunk give it sufficient presence to become a genuine feature within a room. Displayed on a sideboard, console table or dedicated bonsai stand, it creates an immediate focal point.

It would also look superb within a professional environment. A reception area, office, meeting room or foyer provides the perfect setting for a large specimen Ficus, bringing natural greenery and the tranquillity associated with bonsai into the space.

Unlike a decorative object, however, a bonsai continues to develop. New leaves emerge, branches extend and the tree gradually evolves under your care.

Bonsai Variety

Fig (Ficus retusa) The fig has dark green glossy leaves and is unusual in that it will tolerate lower light levels. The fig makes a fantastic indoor bonsai and should be protected from the frost. It buds back very quickly after pruning and has an immense amount of character in the truck and aerial root system. A very powerful bonsai, fun and easy to care for. It is also less susceptible to pest attack. Protect from cold (min 10oC).
