Lloyd starts by pruning the bonsai, ensuring he has a lovely shaped foliage canopy to start. Pruning first also means less clean up once the bonsai is freshly potted. Next, he removes the bonsai from the pot and teases the roots. This allows the roots to flatten and spread out which is going to be needed for this style.

Moving on to the pot, Lloyd had already prepped the pot with our potting mesh and potting wire. He then fills the pot with soil, creating a mound for the bonsai to sit on. When creating your garden, ensure that you factor watering into how high you place your bonsai.

As you can see, Lloyd then places his fruiting bonsai onto the mound of soil and plays with the roots a little more.

Structure your bonsai garden in your own style!

Lloyd adds a few rocks before wiring in the Sageretia, this means he can get a feel for the landscape before its really set in stone (sorry, I couldn’t resist). He then adds some soil and uses the chopstick to encourage the new soil to sit in the roots of the bonsai. Once he is happy with this, he wires the bonsai into place.

Lloyd then spends some time placing the rocks, surrounding them with soil and making sure everything is secure. Chopsticks are a great tool to use for this!

Using a coir brush, Lloyd cleans up the soil around the edges of the pot creating a pristine finish. He also uses the brush to even out the soil and clean up the excess that is sat on the rocks. To perfect his garden further, he goes in with a small clean paint brush to clean up.

Adding more visual appeal

Bonsai is art and all art is subject to each person, bonsai is no different. Create your own bonsai garden, move the rocks around, add little ornaments.. there are no rules!

Lloyd adds gravel to his garden, in this case it is to create a path. Gravel is also used to create water features like waterfalls and ponds. For precise placement, he pours the gravel carefully whilst using the paintbrush to spread it out and flatten it down.

Lloyd created this bonsai garden with the vision of sitting beneath the tree and just relaxing.
