A Festive Bonsai Guide for Beginners

Happy Christmas!
If you’re reading this on Christmas Day, chances are one of two magical things has happened: either a beautiful bonsai tree has just arrived in your home… or you’re already planning the next little treat for your miniature tree. Either way, we’re absolutely delighted to celebrate the day with you.

From our family-run nursery here in rural mid Devon, we want to say a heartfelt thank you and share a little Christmas bonsai care inspiration for anyone enjoying a new tree today. Your support means the world to us, and we’re raising a cup of something warm and Christmassy to every customer who has welcomed one of our trees into their life this year. We wish you joy, rest, and a wonderfully green Christmas.

Christmas Bonsai Care: Enjoying Your Tree Over the Festive Period

Whether your bonsai is an indoor variety or a hardy outdoor species, Christmas is a lovely time to enjoy their calming presence. They bring such a peaceful, natural feel to a room full of wrapping paper, fairy lights, and excited family chatter.

Here are some simple, beginner-friendly tips to help you display your tree safely over the holiday.

Bonsai Trees for Indoors

Indoor bonsai such as Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia), Fukien Tea (Carmona microphylla), or Sweet Plum (Sageretia theezans) love bright daylight and a stable temperature. Indoor varieties are very easy to enjoy over the holidays, and a little Christmas bonsai care goes a long way to keeping them happy. Over Christmas, pop them somewhere where you can see them often – perhaps on a sideboard, coffee table, or windowsill in a bright position.
Just keep them clear of radiators, fires, and draughts, and enjoy the gentle greenery amidst all the festive sparkle.

Outdoor Bonsai

It’s completely fine to bring outdoor bonsai inside for a few days so you can enjoy them with your decorations. They make a surprisingly lovely Christmas display when paired with natural pine cones, soft lights, or a festive table setting.
Do remember they are outdoor-loving trees, so after two or three days of indoor admiration, simply return them outside to their normal spot to keep them healthy.

Christmas Treats for New Bonsai Owners

If today is the first day you’re meeting your bonsai – congratulations! It’s an exciting, rewarding hobby and we’re here to help you every step of the way.

You may find you want a couple of extras to help care for your tree. Items such as bonsai fertiliser, pruning scissors, humidity misters, or a matching drip tray can make day-to-day care easier and keep your bonsai neat, nourished, and full of character. All these little accessories help you get the very best from your tree, encouraging fresh growth, tighter foliage, and beautiful styling.

Festive Care Tips to Keep Your Bonsai Happy After Christmas

As the fairy lights twinkle and the last mince pies disappear, your bonsai will be settling in beautifully. Here are some simple, cosy, Christmas-friendly care tips to help your new little tree thrive long after the decorations are packed away.

Watering

Think of watering like offering your bonsai its own warm Christmas drink.
Keep the soil gently damp, never dry and not soaking wet. A quick daily check with your fingertip is perfect. If the compost feels a little dry, give it a slow, steady watering until it runs through the base. Indoor bonsai often sip a bit less in winter, but always trust the soil rather than the date on the calendar. Your tree will soon tell you what it prefers.

Positioning

Just as we all gravitate towards cosy, bright corners at Christmas, your bonsai enjoys good light and stable temperatures.
Indoor trees love a sunny windowsill or a naturally bright room, away from radiators and chilly draughts. Outdoor bonsai are welcome to join the festivities inside for a few days, but after the celebrations, pop them back outside so they can enjoy the fresh winter air where they’re happiest. Your printed guide will advise you of the best spot for your bonsai species.

Feeding

Once the New Year rolls in, your indoor bonsai will appreciate a little nutritional boost.
A weekly feed is like giving your tree a tiny Christmas treat throughout the year, helping it grow strong, vibrant and full of life. For outdoor varieties of bonsai stop feeding during winter months.

Basic Pruning

Pruning is where the magic happens.
A gentle trim keeps your bonsai tidy, elegant and full of character. Simply nip back longer shoots to maintain shape, or use a small pair of bonsai scissors for more precision. Light, regular pruning encourages fuller foliage and that beautiful, balanced structure that makes bonsai so enchanting.
