At Bonsai Direct, we are continually inspired by the incredible ways bonsai touches people’s lives. For many, these little trees become much more than a hobby. They offer calm, focus, creativity, and — for some — a powerful source of healing. This is why we love sharing real stories from our community, especially from those who have discovered the meaningful benefits of bonsai for mental health.
Everyone begins their bonsai journey differently. Some are drawn in by the artistry, others by the joy of learning a new skill or the companionship of online bonsai friends. And for many people living with mobility challenges, long-term conditions, or difficult life experiences, caring for a bonsai becomes a gentle way to reconnect with nature and find moments of mindfulness at home.
Today, we are honoured to share one customer’s deeply personal journey. It’s a story of resilience, passion, and the quiet strength found in nurturing living things. A beautiful reminder that bonsai can bring comfort, stability, and purpose even in life’s hardest chapters.
We hope Paul’s experience inspires anyone considering bonsai for the first time, especially those exploring the supportive benefits of bonsai for mental health. This heartfelt account shows just how meaningful these tiny trees can be.
Note from Olea at Bonsai Direct: This article comes straight from Paul himself, along with all the photos you’ll see throughout. We’re incredibly thankful to him for opening up and sharing his bonsai journey with such honesty. His experience shines a light on the beauty of these tiny trees — and how caring for them can quietly nurture confidence, resilience, and personal growth along the way.

Getting into Bonsai
Since watching the Karate Kid film in 1984 and yes I am old 😂 I wanted to get a bonsai tree and learn martial arts in which I did. I brought my first bonsai tree at the Southsea show in the plant tent. With no instructions on how to look after the bonsai? I used to go to the library and try to understand looking after a bonsai! And for sure it died. Which is sad!
I just couldn’t understand how to look after a bonsai? I was a delivery driver for a while and used to go past (Little Oak Bonsai nursery) and I used to go around and look at the beautiful bonsais! And I brought a couple and joined the training session with Lloyd Noall. I loved it. And at the same time I had an outside space for the bonsai I created at Little Oak Bonsai. I love them all.
Also, I used to go to Stansted park where there was a nursery in which they sold bonsai trees of all sorts. I used to buy some and sell them at work as I got to know the seller. He then offered me to buy his bonsai company? I must of thought that there must have been a reason why he was selling it to me? I can be very untrusting with people as I get that gut feeling not to do it? But I had to move to a different place and got rid of my bonsais and some of them died. I used to work as you know as a delivery driver and then a warehouse manager.
The Ups and Downs of Life

Then through my life with ups and downs and marriage ending I became depressed with psychosis and severe mental health issues. It was a very tough time for me as I was in a very dark place but with the help of my GP and mental health team they did eventually help with coping methods and each day is a new day and with different challenges? I left my job as a warehouse manager and eventually got a job as a Mental health carer in a supported living building! To get them ready for their own place to live eventually! It was a very tough job but it was therapy for myself at the same time? I have seen all sorts but I could understand what some of them were going through?
I used to get up at 4am in the morning and travel to get to work for 7.30 am and finish at 2.30pm! But sometimes with a late I wouldn’t get home until 10.30pm. I never had any days of sick until I had trouble breathing and I went to A&E and they took me straight into Rhesus! They did X-rays and scans on my lungs and they found out the I had what’s called empyema! They put 4 tubes into my lung to try and drain it? I also had pneumonia and sepsis!
They took me to the ward but my organs were closing down. They rushed me to Southampton hospital and had surgery straight away! I woke up in ICU after being in an induced coma with the family around me as they were told that I might not make it? I couldn’t talk as I had tubes down my throat and tubes in my body! So they game me a wipe board to write any messages! I was released from hospital 3 weeks later! I went back to work later for a while? But then I broke my leg? I had to leave my job! I then broke my leg again due to having a diabetic hypo in which I dislocated my ankle and broke my leg! In hospital for 3 weeks again!

Finding Bonsai Direct
Well we are getting near to why I ordered my first bonsai from Bonsai Direct? While recovering from my broken and dislocated leg and not being able to put any weight on it? I was struggling? And while I was on TikTok and one day I saw a Bonsai Direct live? And it was amazing as I was able to ask many questions to Holly and Amber about bonsai trees! I was drawn in to find out more and then I eventually made my first purchase of a Chinese elm (Othelia) I named her! And Bonsai Direct were always on hand to answer any questions!
How time has changed when there wasn’t anyone to answer any questions about bonsai to now? And then I brought a Fukien tea tree and I named her (Lilly) and now it has snowballed to over 40 bonsai trees? And I love every single one of them! Buying bonsais from Bonsai Direct has made me more calm! I have learnt a lot and I enjoy spending time with my bonsais! They are my life now and I wouldn’t know what to do without them!
Appreciating the Bonsai Trees

And I love to learn more about bonsai trees and improve my knowledge.
I do have bad days mentally and physically as I can’t walk very well with osteoporosis now and arthritis in my legs. Looking after my bonsai gives me so much joy and a purpose in life and it relaxes my mind! It is a privilege to have bonsais to look after? I am now surrounded by the bonsai and I can see the change in each one everyday, and I wouldn’t change a single thing about them. It is hard to pick my favourites as each day is different? It is a toss up between Herman my split trunk Chinese Elm or Iggy my other Chinese Elm.
And I have many projects for the new year on my bonsais which I am looking forward to! I am so happy that I found Bonsai Direct as I have many bonsai friends around the world now! That is a short story on why I love bonsai trees so very much.
Kind regards,
Paul

Little Oak Bonsai & Bonsai Direct – One and the Same
Some readers may notice Paul’s early connection with Little Oak Bonsai Nursery and wonder how it relates to Bonsai Direct. In fact, they are one and the same.
Little Oak Bonsai was founded by Lloyd Noall in 1995 in West Sussex, where Lloyd built a reputation for hands-on training, expert growing, and a deep respect for traditional bonsai practice. In 2005, Lloyd moved to Devon with his young family and recognised that the rural location offered something special — but also presented a challenge. To reach bonsai lovers across the UK, an online nursery was the natural next step.
Together with his wife Sarah, and now joined by their children Holly, Olea, and Oak, Lloyd founded and grew Bonsai Direct, which has since become the UK’s largest online bonsai specialist. While the name evolved, the heart of the nursery never changed — the same expertise, the same values, and the same passion for sharing bonsai with others.
More recently, Paul has become a much-loved part of that journey too. His support, enthusiasm, and presence on our TikTok Lives perfectly reflect what Bonsai Direct is all about: real people, real stories, and a shared love of bonsai.
