About the Species – Sageretia theezans

Commonly known as the Chinese Sweet Plum, Sageretia theezans is native to southern China and parts of Southeast Asia. It is prized in bonsai for several reasons:

• Naturally small leaves that scale beautifully in miniature form

• Fine twigging and strong back-budding ability

• Attractive reddish-brown bark that develops texture with age

• Seasonal foliage tones, including fresh lime green growth and occasional red or tan hues

The leaves are oval, glossy and proportionate, forming a dense, compact canopy. During periods of active growth, new shoots often flush with bronze or russet tones before deepening to green. In summer, tiny pale yellow flowers may appear, which are then followed by the distinctive plum-like fruits.
