The Acer campestre bonsai is often more comely called a Field Maple or English Maple (Acer Campestre). It is one of the hardiest maples and displays sunning autumnal foliage colours.

Standing 54cm in total height, this 15 year old hardy bonsai has a stunning forked structure. The trunk is strong and has immense character.
Additionally, one of the best features is the beautiful taper of the trunk. It starts thicker at the base and gradually reduces in sizes towards the top of the tree. The main branches are strong and uncluttered. A native maple variety highly regarded for its hardiness and beauty. Also, in spring the leaves are a vibrant lime green often flashed with pretty red hues. The new stems are red in colour and in autumn months the whole bonsai is a mass of golden foliage.

I love the way the red stems and the red flushed to the leaves is highlighted by the burgundy glaze of the pot.

The Acer campestre, commonly known as the English field maple, is a deciduous tree native to Europe, including parts of England.

Here are its main features:

1. Appearance: The English field maple is an impressive bonsai with a rounded crown and a dense, spreading canopy. Its bark is grey-brown and smooth when young, becoming furrowed and rough with age. The leaves are small, opposite, and palmately lobed with three to five lobes. Moreover, they turn golden in autumn, adding to the tree’s ornamental beauty.
2. Flowers and Fruits: In spring, the tree produces small, inconspicuous yellow-green flowers that grow in clusters. These flowers are followed by winged seeds known as samaras, which are borne in pairs and turn pale brown as they mature. The seeds are often dispersed by wind.
3. Habitat and Growing Conditions: Acer campestre is an easy care hardy species which thrives in full sun to partial shade. It displays very attractive foliage.
4. Maintenance: The English field maple is very low-maintenance once established. Chiefly, it requires occasional pruning to maintain its shape. Remember, it is also important to monitor for pests, although it is generally resistant to most common pests and diseases.
