This delightful Chinese Sweet Plum (Sageretia theezans) is a wonderful choice for beginners or anyone looking for an easy-care indoor bonsai with year-round charm. This species offers something quite special — as the bonsai matures, it can produce miniature, plum-shaped purple fruits that nestle among the leaf pads. The soft green leaves often flush with red or bronze in spring and summer. Thus, adding natural colour contrast and seasonal interest.

Species Spotlight: Dwarf Fruiting Chinese Sweet Plum Facts 🌱

Native to southern China, the Sageretia theezans is also known as the “Chinese Bird Plum” due to birds feasting on its tiny fruits in the wild.
It belongs to the Buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae) and naturally grows as a small shrub or tree.
Unlike many indoor bonsai, the Sweet Plum tolerates low humidity better. Thereby, making it ideal for indoor environments.
Its leaves contain tannins and antioxidants and were historically brewed into a mild tea (hence “theezans“, derived from Thea for tea). We don’t recommend that you do this 🙂
