Flowering Purple Cherry (Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’): The Purple Cherry Blossom, or Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’, is a beautiful dwarf bonsai with a unique zigzag twig structure and deep purple leaves. In spring, it blooms with pale pink flowers from deep pink buds. As the seasons change, the foliage transitions to a rich blackish-purple and later to vibrant reds and oranges in autumn, when it also produces small fruits. This deciduous bonsai is perfect for beginners and thrives in full sun exposure outdoors.
Evergreen Juniper (Juniperus chinensis): The Juniperus chinensis, or Juniper bonsai, is a gorgeous outdoor variety. The trunks have incredible structure with textured bark and lovely features. They are a great variety for beginners due to their hardy nature. They are evergreen which means that they keep their foliage all year round! This particular bonsai will arrive with spikey foliage. As the bonsai matures, the spikey foliage will often beautifully. It is an easy care bonsai which will make a fantastic addition to any outdoor space!
Bonsai Tree Care
Location: Both the Purple Cherry and Juniper thrive in outdoor environments. They prefer full sun with shelter from harsh conditions, which supports healthy growth and vibrant foliage.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, especially during the growing season. Both species appreciate a balanced watering routine that maintains soil dampness without water logging.
Pruning and Wiring: Regular pruning is essential to maintain the shape and encourage branching. Both the Purple Cherry and Juniper respond well to pruning and can be shaped using wiring techniques. Be sure to check the wires regularly to prevent scarring.
Repotting: Repot your bonsai every 2-3 years in early spring before new growth begins. Use a well-draining soil mix to promote healthy root development and prevent root rot.
Fertilising: Feed your bonsai with a specific bonsai fertiliser during the growing (typically March – October) season. This provides the necessary nutrients to support vigorous growth and robust health.
