Starter Bonsai Trees | Flowering Purple Cherry & Mountain Pine Bonsai
Flowering Purple Cherry (Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’): The Purple Cherry Blossom, or Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’, is a beautiful dwarf bonsai with a unique zigzag twig structure and deep purple leaves. In spring, it blooms with pale pink flowers from deep pink buds. As the seasons change, the foliage transitions to a rich blackish-purple and later to vibrant reds and oranges in autumn, when it also produces small fruits. This deciduous bonsai is perfect for beginners and thrives in full sun exposure outdoors.
Evergreen Mountain Pine (Pinus Mugo): The Mountain Pine (Pinus Mugo) is an evergreen bonsai that is highly valued in the bonsai community for its compact growth, resilience, and year-round beauty. Native to Europe’s rugged terrains, this species features tidy, dense foliage and a naturally neat form, making it ideal for creating well-defined bonsai shapes. The Mountain Pine is exceptionally hardy, thriving in cold and windy environments while maintaining its lush green needles throughout the year. This versatile bonsai responds well to pruning and wiring, allowing for a variety of styling options, from formal upright to creative windswept designs.
Bonsai Tree Care
Location: Both the Purple Cherry and Mugo thrive in outdoor environments. They prefer full sun with the Cherry needing shelter from harsh conditions, which supports healthy growth and vibrant foliage.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, especially during the growing season. Both species appreciate a balanced watering routine that maintains soil dampness without water logging.
Pruning and Wiring: Regular pruning is essential to maintain the shape and encourage branching. Both the Purple Cherry and Mountain Pine respond well to pruning and can be shaped using wiring techniques. Be sure to check the wires regularly to prevent scarring.
Repotting: Repot your bonsai every 2-3 years in early spring before new growth begins. Use a well-draining soil mix to promote healthy root development and prevent root rot.
Fertilising: Feed your bonsai with a specific bonsai fertiliser during the growing (typically March – October) season. This provides the necessary nutrients to support vigorous growth and robust health.
These twin bonsai starter plants, the Purple Cherry Blossom and Mountain Pine, are both 5 years old and potted into matching classic blue ceramic pots, ready for you to grow and style. These hardy species are ideal for the garden, patio, balcony, or any outdoor setting, providing a beautiful and resilient addition to your bonsai collection.
