Care Requirements
Location and Light:
- Place your Green Beech bonsai outdoors where it can receive full to partial sunlight. This exposure is crucial for healthy growth and vibrant foliage.
Watering:
- Keep the soil consistently damp but well-drained. Water whenever the topsoil feels slightly dry. Knowing British weather the rainfall do much for this for you during the autumn and winter months.
Pruning and Shaping:
- Regular pruning is essential to maintain its shape and encourage a dense canopy. Trim back new growth to the desired shape and remove any dead or unwanted branches. Keep the tips pruned will encourage ‘back-budding’ and for new smaller leaves to open further down the branches to create neater foliage pads.
Repotting:
- Repot the bonsai every 2-3 years in early spring before new growth begins. Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix to promote healthy root development. During repotting, prune a little of the root ball to prevent root-bound conditions and to encourage new growth.
Fertilising:
- Feed your bonsai with a bonsai fertiliser during the growing season. This provides the necessary nutrients to support vigorous growth and overall health.
Winter Care:
- As a hardy outdoor bonsai, the Green Beech can withstand colder temperatures. However, protect it from extreme frost and strong winds by placing it in a sheltered location or using a cold frame during harsh winter months.

In the spring the leaves appear to have an artificial lime green iridescence and during autumn the leaves turn yellow at first, then orange and brown. To me the beech signifies the changing British seasons. The bark of the beech is smooth and grey and the leaves are often retained well into the winter, finally released as the new buds swell in the spring. Shape by pruning. Very hardy. |
