We’ve known this tree since it was just a sapling—17 years ago, Lloyd Noall began carefully growing and shaping it right here at our Devon nursery. It’s been an absolute pleasure watching it evolve into the striking twin-trunk Larch bonsai it is today.

The foliage is a real seasonal show-stopper. In spring, soft lime-green rosettes of needles burst into life, and by autumn, the whole tree glows golden. The elegant twin trunks taper beautifully, and Lloyd’s signature styling is clear in the natural informal upright structure and brilliantly positioned branches. The canopy is light, airy and open—just the way Larches like it—letting sunlight filter through and highlight the texture of the bark.

The root base is another highlight, with exposed roots gently gripping the soil, giving the tree a grounded, harmonious look. Holly recently potted this into a brand new cream-glazed rectangular ceramic pot, which really brings out the fresh greens and warm tones of the trunk.

Nestled within a new cream glazed rectangular ceramic bonsai pot, this European Larch bonsai tree, boasting 16 years of growth, presents an informal upright form that captivates with its impressive design. The branch arrangement is nothing short of splendid. Supporting fresh lime green needles in rosettes. The trunk form is exceptional. Elegant and clean lines with a supreme trunk taper. The twin trunked design is particularly tasteful. Come spring, delicate florets of vibrant green needles adorn its branches, transitioning to a magnificent golden hue come autumn.

The European Larch (Larix decidua) is a deciduous conifer tree native to mountainous regions of central Europe. Here are its main attributes:

Needles: Unlike most conifers, the European Larch features soft, light-green needles that grow in clusters of 30-50 needles. These needles turn golden-yellow in autumn before falling off in winter, giving the tree a distinctive seasonal appearance.
Bark: The bark of the European Larch is reddish-brown and scaly when young, becoming deeply furrowed and greyish-brown with age. The rough texture of the bark adds visual interest to the tree’s trunk and branches.
Cones: European Larch trees produce small, woody cones that are initially purple or green before maturing to brown. The cones are ovoid in shape and about 2-4 centimetres long. They disintegrate upon ripening, releasing winged seeds that are dispersed by wind.

Pruning:

Pruning is essential for maintaining the health and aesthetic appeal of a Larch bonsai (Larix spp.). This species responds well to pruning, which should be conducted primarily during the dormant season in late winter or early spring. Remove any dead, or crossing branches, as well as any shoots growing inward. Additionally, selective pruning can be performed throughout the growing season to shape the bonsai and encourage ramification. Use sharp and clean pruning tools to make precise cuts.

Positioning:

Larch bonsai trees thrive in locations outdoors. Position the bonsai in a place where it can receive full sun to partial shade throughout the day, ensuring it gets enough sunlight for optimal growth and development. Protect the tree from strong winds, as excessive wind can damage its delicate foliage and branches. During winter, protect the bonsai from long periods of freezing temperatures to prevent frost damage.

Watering:

Larch bonsai trees prefer a damp, well-draining soil. They do not like to be soaking wet for long periods. You are aiming to keep the soil damp to the touch. During hot weather or when the bonsai is actively growing, you may need to water more frequently to prevent the soil from drying out completely.

Feeding:

Feed your Larch bonsai regularly during the growing season (spring through early autumn) to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth and foliage development. Use a balanced liquid bonsai fertiliser weekly whilst in leaf. Alternatively, you can use a slow-release granular fertiliser applied in early spring. Stop fertilising during the dormant winter months when the tree is not actively growing or following re-potting.

The European Larch holds rich symbolic and cultural significance across various traditions. In ancient beliefs, it was revered as the “world tree,” a sacred symbol representing the connection between the earthly realm and the spiritual world.
