Extremely Artistic Chinese Elm Bonsai Tree | 14-Year-Old Premium Specimen
Chinese Elm Bonsai Tree Hand styled by Lloyd at Bonsai Direct
This Chinese Elm bonsai has been carefully grown and shaped over fourteen years, and it really shows. Styled by Lloyd here at Bonsai Direct, this is one of those trees that feels settled and complete the moment you see it. The trunk flows in a neat, serpentine line from the roots upward, with a calm, confident movement that never feels forced or overworked.
The shape is clean and deliberate. Lloyd has kept the design simple, letting the natural movement of the trunk do the talking. As a result, the tree feels elegant rather than dramatic, with a rhythm that draws your eye slowly upward instead of demanding attention all at once.
Trunk Flow, Roots & Structure
The trunk is the heart of this bonsai. It moves smoothly in a gentle S-curve, with each bend flowing naturally into the next. The bark has developed real texture and maturity over time, adding depth and character without overwhelming the design.
Branches emerge exactly where you want them. They follow the trunk’s movement rather than fighting it, which keeps the whole composition balanced and relaxed. There’s nothing cluttered or busy here — just good structure and thoughtful placement.
Chinese Elm Bonsai Tree Foliage & Canopy
The foliage has been kept neat and in proportion. Small Chinese Elm leaves form tidy pads that frame the trunk instead of hiding it. Because the canopy stays light and open, you can always appreciate the flow of the trunk from every angle. This balance between fine foliage and strong movement gives the tree its quiet presence.
Presentation
This bonsai is planted in a brand new cream glazed ceramic pot, chosen to sit quietly beneath the tree rather than compete with it. The soft, neutral finish works beautifully with the bark tones and green foliage. A matching drip tray sits beneath the pot to protect surfaces and make everyday care simple.
Species Overview – Ulmus parvifolia
Chinese Elm is one of the most reliable indoor bonsai species we work with. It adapts well to indoor conditions, responds well to pruning, and copes with the occasional mistake. That makes it a great choice if you’re still learning, while the age and styling of this tree will also appeal to more experienced bonsai lovers.
A Tree with Meaning
The Chinese Elm is often associated with strength, wisdom, and resilience. This particular tree carries those qualities naturally. It’s a bonsai that feels calm and reassuring in a space, whether placed on a sideboard, desk, or low table.
This is a carefully styled, 14-year-old Chinese Elm bonsai that reflects Lloyd’s hand and experience. It’s not flashy or overdone — just well grown, well shaped, and ready to be enjoyed for many years to come.
How to Care for this Sensational Bonsai – An Easy to follow care guide is included.
1. Location: This well established bonsai is not fussy about location. If outdoors, protect the tree from extreme weather conditions like strong winds, heavy rain, harsh sunlight and frosts. Indoors, place it near a bright (indirect sunlight) window but away from direct heat sources like radiators or air conditioners.
2. Watering: The goal is to maintain the soil so that it is just damp. Check the top soil daily; if it feels dry to the touch, it’s time to water. During hotter months or windy conditions, more frequent watering may be necessary. Use a watering can with a fine nozzle to avoid disturbing the soil or roots. This bonsai is potted into Akadama. A top quality Japanese Bonsai Soil. The Akadama will turn lighter in colour to indicate that it may need a little water.
3. Humidity: If kept indoors, consider using a humidity tray filled with water and pebbles to increase the ambient moisture around the tree. This is best practice especially in winter when the heating is on and the air is drier. Alternatively please mist the leaves regularly with water.

4. Feeding: A balanced, liquid bonsai fertiliser is ideal. Apply weekly throughout the year. One bottle will last approximately one year for a single bonsai. It is a concentrated solution which goes a long way when diluted.
5. Pruning: Regular pruning is essential to maintain shape and promote healthy growth. Prune back new growth to promote bushier, denser foliage.
6. Repotting: Larger, older bonsai may not need frequent repotting and can go 3-5 years between sessions. When repotting, be gentle with the root system. Trim back a small portion of the roots to encourage new growth, but be cautious not to remove too much. Use fresh bonsai soil toro replace and which has been removed during root pruning. Alternatively, you may simply prefer to choose a larger pot; in which case root pruning is likely to be unnecessary.
7. Pest and Disease Management: We use a plant invigorator spray as a preventative measure. This is a great product which can be used on other plants. It also acts as a foliar feed. Highly recommended.
