This particular Green Beech bonsai (Fagus sylvatica) has been styled to echo the beautifully wind-shaped trees found in Devon’s hedgerows. It carries a subtle semi-windswept design that feels wonderfully natural, with excellent movement in both trunk and branches. At 14 years old and standing 44cm in height, it perfectly captures the spirit of Mid Devon’s hardy rural landscapes.
“We’ve grown this Green Beech bonsai from a young sapling, starting it off around 14 years ago, so it’s been a real journey watching it develop into the beautiful tree it is today. The taper on the trunk is absolutely outstanding – it’s one of those features you just can’t fake, and it really gives the tree a sense of maturity and is the foundation of any good bonsai tree.
I love that its styling and movement are inspired by the wind-shaped trees you see tucked into Devon’s hedgerows – it genuinely captures the essence of the English countryside. Right now, I’m enjoying the open, uncluttered structure, which gives it a light, airy feel. In time, you can prune back the tips of the branches to encourage a denser, more compact canopy, but for the moment, that sense of space really shows off the movement in the trunk and branches beautifully.”
The bonsai is presented in a rectangular classic deep blue ceramic bonsai pot, a timeless choice that perfectly complements the tree’s vibrant seasonal foliage while adding a sense of depth and stability to the composition.
