This impressive 18-year-old Ulmus parvifolia offers real strength and presence, making it an excellent indoor bonsai for beginners. The trunk measures around 3.5cm in diameter and rises with strong twists, giving the tree a bold and confident character. Although mature, it stands at a compact 42cm, resulting in a wonderfully squat and powerful stature that feels grounded and timeless.

We photographed this exact tree in mid-December 2025, and you can clearly see the fresh new-season foliage. The natural leaf size of this species remains small, which helps the tree look beautifully in proportion at all times. Maintenance

Position the tree in a bright place with good airflow. Water when the soil begins to dry. Apply bonsai fertiliser weekly to encourage strong growth and fine branching. Chinese Elms adapt well, so they are not fussy about specific locations, but avoid extreme draughts for best results. Another great product that I can high recommend is bonsai mist. Bonsai mist is a superb addition as it foliar feeds, conditions the leaves and aids humidity when the heating is on.
