Magnificent 30-Year-Old Olive Bonsai | Mega Specimen Tree
An Extraordinary Olea europaea with the Presence of an Ancient Tuscan Olive
This is a real mega bonsai.
At an impressive 30 years old, this magnificent Olive Bonsai (Olea europaea) has everything we look for in an exceptional specimen tree: age, stature, superb proportions and an extraordinarily powerful trunk. It has the wonderful presence of an ancient olive growing in a sun-baked Tuscan grove – only recreated in miniature bonsai form.
Standing approximately 62cm tall with an impressive spread of around 50cm, this is no ordinary bonsai. The trunk measures over 10cm in diameter – quite literally as thick as an arm – and immediately commands attention.
This is the exact specimen bonsai tree you will receive, individually photographed so you can appreciate its remarkable character before it arrives.
Field Grown to Develop an Exceptional Trunk
The foundations of a bonsai like this cannot be created quickly.
This Olive was originally field grown, allowing it the space and vigour required to develop its enormous trunk and impressive nebari. Years of unrestricted early growth helped create the powerful proportions that make this tree so convincing today.
The trunk rises from its substantial base with tremendous visual weight before supporting the broad canopy above. Its thickness gives the bonsai a sense of permanence and age that simply cannot be replicated in younger material.
It looks strong.
It looks ancient.
And it is absolutely awesome.
A Canopy of Beautiful Silvery-Green Olive Leaves
Above that mighty trunk sits a remarkably even, rounded canopy.
Naturally small Olive leaves cover the branching, creating a wonderfully full silhouette without overwhelming the scale of the tree. Their distinctive silvery-green colouring is one of the great attractions of Olea europaea, catching the light beautifully and contrasting with the mature trunk beneath.
The proportions work exceptionally well. At around 62cm tall and 50cm across, the broad canopy has sufficient scale to balance such a substantial trunk.
The result is a large bonsai with genuine presence from every angle.
Like an Ancient Tuscan Olive Grove in Miniature
There is something wonderfully evocative about an old Olive tree.
Think of the ancient olives scattered through the Mediterranean landscape: broad canopies, immense trunks and silvery foliage shimmering in the sunshine.
This specimen captures that character beautifully.
Rather than simply looking like a large plant in a small pot, it creates the illusion that an ancient landscape tree has somehow been reduced to bonsai proportions.
That illusion of age and scale is one of the greatest achievements in bonsai – and this mighty chap has it in abundance.
Beautifully Presented in Olive Green
Lloyd has potted this exceptional tree into a very large olive-green oval ceramic bonsai pot with a matching drip tray.
It is a particularly fitting choice.
The understated green glaze complements the silvery foliage while allowing the huge trunk to remain the star of the composition. Meanwhile, the generous oval shape gives the substantial root system the space and visual balance required by a bonsai of this stature.
Tree and pot work together to create a wonderfully harmonious display.
A True Specimen Bonsai Tree
At 30 years old, this is a genuine specimen bonsai rather than simply an older tree.
Its value lies in the combination of features developed over decades: the enormous trunk, mature proportions, substantial nebari, established branching and beautifully balanced canopy.
Trees of this calibre take many years to create. You simply cannot fast-track a 10cm-plus trunk or reproduce three decades of growth overnight.
For a collector looking for a large bonsai or an exceptional statement tree, this is a very special opportunity.

Caring for Your Olive Specimen Bonsai
Position
During the warmer months, this Olive bonsai is best grown outdoors in a warm, bright and sheltered position. Plenty of natural light will encourage compact, healthy growth and maintain its characteristic foliage.
As temperatures fall, move the tree indoors to a cool, bright room or an unheated conservatory. Avoid positioning it in a very warm living room throughout winter.
Watering
Check the compost regularly and water thoroughly when it begins to dry (ie is very slightly damp to the touch). The exceptionally large pot holds considerably more compost and moisture than a small bonsai pot, so never water simply according to a fixed schedule.
Instead, allow the tree and its growing conditions to tell you when it needs water.
Feeding
Feed regularly throughout the active growing season with a balanced bonsai fertiliser. Consistent feeding helps maintain healthy foliage and supports the continued development of this substantial specimen.
Pruning
Olives respond well to pruning. Trim new shoots during the growing season to preserve the rounded canopy and encourage increasingly fine branching.
This is also a wonderful tree to continue developing. Although it already has 30 years of character behind it, a bonsai is never truly finished.
Thirty Years in the Making
Perhaps the most extraordinary thing about this Olive bonsai is the time contained within it.
Thirty years of growth have created a trunk wider than 10cm. Years of cultivation have transformed field-grown material into an impressive specimen bonsai. Now, its mighty trunk supports a beautifully proportioned canopy of delicate silvery leaves.
It has the rugged strength of an ancient Mediterranean Olive and the refinement of a carefully cultivated bonsai.
Large, powerful and packed with character, this is not a bonsai that quietly disappears into the background.
This mighty chap deserves to be admired.
