The weathered texture of the aged trunk adds an artistic depth, and its remarkable design showcases a truly distinctive aesthetic. The graceful canopy, adorned with delicate leaves and carefully positioned branches, exudes elegance, further emphasised by the exposed roots, forging a harmonious connection between the tree and its pot.
The trunk flow has a serpentine structure. As the roots rise from the soil they blend with the supremely twisting trunk flow. The bark has a very natural ‘cork-bark effect’ adding to the natural maturity and visual appeal of this unique and understated bonsai tree. The taper of the trunk is excellent and the styling is elegant yet full of character. The new seasons leaves are just opening; soon the bonsai will be covered in new lime green miniature leaves. This is an evergreen species but the main growing periods are through spring and summer. We have grown it as an indoor bonsai but with a little protection during harsh winter weather this bonsai will happily live outside for most of the year.
🌿 Personal Opinion: This 24-year-old Chinese Elm is something really special. It’s one of those trees that could be overlooked at first glance, but take a moment to really study it and it reveals itself as a quiet masterpiece. The exposed roots are incredible, like something shaped by years of river erosion, giving it such a raw, natural woodland feel. It doesn’t shout for attention — it draws you in.
The trunk has superb taper and graceful movement on a grander scale than usual. There’s a real sense of age and presence here, with bark that’s already showing a mature cork-like texture. The flow from root to canopy is seamless, full of character and understated elegance.
It’s been a joy watching this one develop at the nursery, and we’ll be sad to see it go. But trees like this are meant to be shared — and appreciated up close. Whether you’re just starting your bonsai journey or have a collection already, this one is highly recommended. It’s not your average bonsai — it’s the kind of tree that rewards time and attention, and only gets better with age.
