Caring for your indoor character bonsai tree – A perfect choice for beginners

• Lighting: Place your Chinese Elm in a location where it can receive plenty of indirect sunlight. Direct morning sunlight is beneficial, but avoid harsh afternoon sun in mid summer. This is a relatively hardy species so can live outside during warmer months. It is not overly fussy about positioning and will happily thrive in a cooler room.
• Watering: Keep the soil just damp to the touch. Ensure it does not dry out. During the warmer weather it will require more regular watering than it would in mid winter. It is an evergreen species so has leaves all year round so will be transpiring throughout the year.
• Temperature and Humidity: This bonsai is happy in most environments can tolerate considerable temperature fluctuations. If kept indoors, a humidity tray can help maintain the necessary humidity levels. Or we suggest misting the leaves with water during winter when the central heating is on. This is in addition to keeping the soil damp to the touch.
• Feeding: Fertilise your Chinese Elm every week with a balanced diluted liquid bonsai fertiliser to promote health and growth.
• Pruning and Shaping: Regular pruning is necessary to maintain its shape and promote denser foliage. Trim back new growth to the desired size, being mindful of the tree’s overall shape. Pruning the tips will encourage ‘back-budding’ where new leaves open further down the branches creating a neat and compact habit.
