Caring for Your Indoor Elm Bonsai Tree – Ideal for Beginners

Lighting: Place your bonsai where it will receive plenty of daylight, avoiding direct sunlight.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently damp, but avoid water logging. In warmer weather, the tree may require more frequent watering. As an evergreen, the Chinese Elm keeps its leaves throughout the year, necessitating regular watering to keep it healthy. Aim to keep the soil just damp at all times.

Feeding: Boost growth and vitality by fertilising your Chinese Elm weekly with a balanced, diluted liquid Bonsai Direct bonsai fertiliser. Also, consider using a Plant Invigorator, which provides foliar nutrients and helps protect against pests and diseases, found to be highly effective in our nursery. It is also suitable for use with other plants.

Pruning and Shaping: Occasional pruning is crucial to maintain the correct shape and encourage dense foliage. Regularly trim new growth to control the tree’s size and preserve its aesthetic design. Pruning encourages ‘back-budding’, promoting new growth near the trunk for a compact and full appearance.

Species	The Chinese Elm (Ulmus parviflolia) makes a truly beautiful bonsai with small bright green leaves. The tree has excellent twig structure and has great character throughout, making it the perfect representation of a woodland tree. In our opinion the Chinese Elm is the most perfectly proportioned, easy to care for and adaptable tree and makes a superb bonsai; which can be grown either indoors or outdoors.
