Premium Neagari Sweet Plum Bonsai | Exceptional 8-Year-Old Indoor Bonsai
Sensational Exposed Roots & Outstanding Character
This exceptional 8-year-old Chinese Sweet Plum Bonsai (Sageretia theezans) is a wonderful example of Neagari style, with one of the most striking exposed root flares. Compact, characterful and incredibly well proportioned, this is a premium indoor bonsai with an enormous amount of personality.
The exposed roots are undoubtedly the star of the design. They spread dramatically from the base of the trunk, twisting and flowing before disappearing into the soil. Their appearance is wonderfully natural – almost as though the earth surrounding an old tree has gradually been eroded away by a riverbank, leaving its powerful root structure exposed.
Above this sensational root flare sits a short, stout trunk with a gentle curve, providing the perfect foundation for the exceptionally full canopy above.
This is the exact, individually photographed bonsai you will receive!
What is Neagari Bonsai Style?
Neagari is the Japanese term used to describe bonsai where a significant section of the root system is deliberately exposed above the soil.
In nature, exposed roots can develop where trees grow in challenging environments. Flowing water, heavy rainfall and gradual soil erosion can wash earth away from the base of a tree, revealing the roots beneath. Over time, these exposed roots become woody and form an important part of the tree’s structure.
Bonsai artists recreate this natural phenomenon by carefully developing and exposing the root system over many years.
The result can be spectacular. Rather than the trunk simply disappearing into the soil, the eye can follow the tree from its finest branches, down through the trunk and finally into the intricate roots beneath.
On this particular Sweet Plum, the effect is especially beautiful. Its roots look almost as though they have been revealed naturally by years of erosion along a miniature riverbank.
Short, Stout Trunk with a Gentle Curve
Rising from the dramatic roots is a wonderfully compact trunk. Short and stout, it has a subtle curve that introduces just enough movement without competing with the extraordinary root structure below.
Sageretia theezans naturally develops increasingly characterful bark as it matures. The trunk can become textured and slightly craggy, helping relatively compact trees achieve the appearance of something considerably older.
The combination of powerful exposed roots, a substantial little trunk and the dense canopy gives this bonsai fantastic proportions.
It is undeniably cute – but there is also something remarkably mature and characterful about it.
An Absolutely Outstanding Canopy
The canopy on this particular bonsai is superb.
Beautifully even, rounded and exceptionally full, it sits quite low over the trunk to create a wonderfully compact silhouette. The abundance of tiny leaves emphasises the scale of the tree and makes the stout trunk and exposed roots beneath appear even more impressive.
Rather than having a tall or leggy appearance, everything feels beautifully connected. The low canopy, compact trunk and broad root flare work together to create a very balanced miniature tree.
Regular pruning will help maintain this neat rounded crown while encouraging increasingly fine branching as the bonsai continues to develop.
About the Chinese Sweet Plum
Sageretia theezans, commonly known as the Chinese Sweet Plum, is one of our favourite indoor bonsai varieties.
Its naturally small leaves are ideal for bonsai cultivation, while fresh growth often emerges with attractive bronze, tan or reddish tones before gradually turning a rich green. This changing foliage gives the canopy additional colour and interest throughout periods of active growth.
Another particularly attractive feature is the bark. As Sweet Plum matures, it develops increasingly textured, craggy characteristics that can make even relatively small bonsai look wonderfully aged.
Mature trees can also produce tiny flowers followed by small purple plum-like fruits, adding another fascinating feature to this already rewarding species.
Sweet Plum responds particularly well to pruning, making it enjoyable to maintain and develop. With regular trimming, the branching becomes increasingly fine and the canopy can be kept beautifully compact.
Traditionally, Sweet Plum bonsai symbolise protection, tranquillity, new life and warm wishes, making them particularly meaningful living gifts.
Brand-New Cream Ceramic Bonsai Pot
We have professionally potted this tree into a brand-new cream rectangular ceramic bonsai pot.
The understated cream glaze is an excellent choice for such a characterful tree. Its soft, neutral colour allows the deep green foliage, textured trunk and extraordinary exposed roots to take centre stage.
The rectangular shape also provides a strong visual foundation beneath the broad root flare and rounded canopy, helping to balance the composition beautifully.
A matching ceramic drip tray is included to complete the presentation and help protect indoor surfaces.
Premium Quality, Yet Easy to Enjoy
Although this is a premium-quality bonsai with a particularly unusual root structure, Sweet Plum is also a rewarding indoor species for someone beginning their bonsai journey.
Keep your Sageretia theezans in a cool, bright room with plenty of natural light. Regular pruning will maintain its compact shape and give you the opportunity to continue refining the canopy as the tree develops.
At 8 years old, much of the important structural development has already taken place. However, bonsai are never truly finished. With continued care, the bark, branching and overall character should become increasingly impressive as the years pass.
