Caring for an English Oak Bonsai Tree

1. Positioning: English Oak bonsai trees prefer a sunny/semi-shaded location. During extreme summer heat, providing partial shade in the afternoon can prevent leaf scorch. These trees are hardy and can tolerate outdoor conditions, but protection from severe extended periods of frost is recommended.
2. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. During the growing season, water thoroughly when the topsoil feels dry. In winter, reduce watering but do not let the soil completely dry out. Always check the soil moisture before watering.
3. Feeding: Feed your English Oak bonsai with a balanced bonsai fertiliser every week during the growing season (spring through early autumn). Stop feeding in the winter months when the tree is dormant.
4. Pruning: Regular pruning helps maintain the desired shape and promotes healthy growth. Prune new shoots back to two leaves during the growing season. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to improve light penetration. Winter is a good time for structural pruning.
5. Wiring: Wiring can be done to shape the branches, but care must be taken not to damage the bark. The best time to wire is in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Check the wires regularly and remove them once the desired shape is achieved to prevent cutting into the bark.
6. Repotting: Repot your English Oak bonsai every 2-3 years in early spring before new growth starts. Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix. Trim the roots carefully during repotting to encourage a healthy root system.
7. Pest and Disease Control: We have found that a weekly spray with a plant invigorator is extremely successful. It prevents most pests and powdery mildew and foliar feeds to keep the leaves healthy and strong. This is a highly recommended product and is particularly effective on Oak bonsai trees.
