A Practical Guide to Repotting Bonsai Trees
Why You Should Repot Bonsai Trees:
Repotting bonsai trees is essential for several reasons. Sometimes, it’s simply to refresh the look of the tree or give it a new aesthetic appeal. In other instances, it’s to replace a worn-out pot, effectively giving your bonsai a new home. The primary reason, however, is to support the tree’s growth. When a bonsai outgrows its pot, or becomes pot-bound, its roots become tightly packed, hindering healthy growth. Repotting into a slightly larger pot not only enhances its appearance but also promotes healthier, more vigorous growth.
Recognising a Pot-Bound Bonsai:
Over time, potted plants, including bonsai trees, can become pot-bound, where the roots become densely packed, preventing further growth. This can cause the bonsai to stop growing or even decline in health. Healthy root growth is crucial for the overall well-being of a bonsai tree.
To check if your bonsai is pot-bound, carefully remove it from its pot, loosening any securing wires first. If you find that the soil is tightly compacted with roots, it’s time for a root prune or a larger pot. The need for repotting varies by species. For example, the Carmona (Fukien Tea Tree) has delicate roots and doesn’t require frequent repotting, while faster-growing species like the Ulmus parvifolia (Chinese Elm) might need repotting every other year. Typically, older, larger bonsai should be repotted every 3-5 years, while younger trees might need it annually if they grow quickly.
Optimal Timing for Repotting:
For indoor bonsai, the best time to repot is during the warmer months, from May to September. Outdoor deciduous bonsai should be repotted in March, just before buds begin to swell, although local weather conditions can affect this timing. Hardy outdoor evergreens like pines and junipers are usually repotted around March, in early spring. Younger junipers, especially those under 20 years old, can be repotted anytime except in mid-winter.
